squirrel versus jogger
Hey, it's another jogger. Let's throw nuts at him! Image copyright USBFCO courtesy of Shutterstock.com

It’s getting to be springtime, iPhone Lifers! A lot of you are going to be getting out there to run, walk, bike, rollerblade (does anyone do that anymore?), etc. I know I’m planning on getting some fresh air too; but when I go out alone, I always wonder what would happen if I had an emergency. Nobody would know where to find me if I decided to change biking routes or run down a new path. That’s a little scary if I were to be injured or held up by a gang of rogue squirrels or something. I’m not the only one who gets a little freaked out by squirrels, right? They’re scary with those twitchy tails and the erratic movements!

Anyway, there are a few apps that are designed to keep us safe while we’re out there gettin’ our spring on. Surprisingly, none of them include squirrel repellent.

Weird.

1. React Mobile (Free)

This app turns your phone into a terrific security device. It helps you report suspicious incidents or send your current GPS coordinates to a pre-selected contact list with the touch of a button. If a creeper approaches you or you are injured, you can send out a silent SOS (so the creeper doesn’t know) to people you’ve selected so they’re aware that you’re in trouble. Alerts can also be posted to Facebook and Twitter just in case your selected contacts aren’t available.

ReactMobile also has a “follow me” option that allows users to have a friend track them in real time just to make sure they get from place to place safely.

2. StaySafe ($6.99)

With this app, you enter in your expected path and estimate how long it’s going to take you to get to your destination. If you don’t check in within the allotted time, your pre-set emergency contacts will be notified and receive your GPS coordinates. This happens even if your phone is switched off. If your battery is dead, alerts will still be sent with your last known location.

3. MyPanic ($0.99)

This one might actually be a good defense against those squirrels because it emits a loud alarm and flashes bright colors to help scare away an attacker (or get the attention of others nearby who might be able to help you). It probably won’t be much help if you’re on the bike path alone at 6 a.m., but in other situations it can be pretty useful.

4. bSafe (Free)

If you want something with all the bells and whistles, this is your app right here. One touch of a button sounds an alarm, records a video to show your contacts what’s happening, alerts authorities, and tells your contacts where you are. There’s a timer mode that triggers an alarm if you don’t arrive at your destination on time, and it has a “follow me” feature so that friends can track you in real time. There’s even a way to trigger a fake phone call so you can either have an excuse to get out of a tough situation, or appear to be in contact with someone.

With all of these great safety apps, those squirrels aren’t getting away with nuttin’! (Sorry. Couldn’t resist.) Before you get out there to enjoy spring, make sure you choose one that’s right for you and stay safe out there!
