iOS 7 Audio-Only FaceTime Could Mean Free International Calls

At Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month, the tech giant unveiled a glimpes of the new iOS 7. One of the additions, among many others, was the implementation of audio-only Facetime calls. This is supposed to help cut down the bandwidth you use, so you can Facetime on slower networks.

When I first heard about this I thought, "Ok, so what? Who would ever use that?"

But then I got to thinking and realized Apple is building a competitor to Skype right into its operating system. That means all you will have to do is pull up a contact, hit Facetime audio, and as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi, the call will go through.

I know you may still be thinking, "So what?" But what if you are in Europe and you want to make a call? You don't have to worry about buying data cards; you just have to find an open Wi-Fi network. Of course, you could still use Skype, but that would mean the person on the other end would have to have Skype open to receive the call. With Facetime audio, it's already built in.

Time will tell if this is what Apple has in mind, but it would be its style to slip this in under the radar.
