An iPhone with Prescription Glass?

$

0

Ever since I started using computer back in 1982, with my first Apple ][ Bell & Howell Edition, I have needed to wear glasses. Staring for hours at tiny screens didn't help matters and I've worn prescription lenses ever since. It's just a necessary evil, with my job requiring so much computer interaction. However, Scientific American tells us about future phones that could do the vision correction on their own, allowing users to view the screen without glasses.

Such an advancement could be ideal for folks who need glasses just for looking at such a display. Typically that's for farsighted users who can see long distances just fine but need corrective lenses for up-close content such as you'd find on a GPS or smartphone. I've tried something similar, not with Google Glass but with a competitor, Vuzix. They make a set of glasses that has adjustments so I can see their virtual screen, in focus, without using my own prescription lenses.

Vuzix

This type of technology makes sense for a personal device, such as wearables and GPS devices. A tablet or laptop might not be ideal, as multiple users might be looking at the same screen, at times, although facial recognition could help and detect if the person who is using the device is known to need corrective lenses. The device might even detect if they have their glasses on or not, or if they are squinting or holding the device far away to get a better view. One thing is for sure; it's an exciting time for those of us who need glasses to use our smart devices!

If you missed out on Black Friday deals, there are still some good prices to be had. And that will likely continue through the holiday season. Most recently Walmart has lopped $50 off their already discounted regular price for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. An iPhone 6 (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint) with 16 GB memory is $129, and the 6 Plus is $229, according to a report on Bloomberg. This is with a two-year contract. The discount is also available for the 64 GB iPhone 6 model. This may be in-store only, since I can only find their prepaid phones on their website.

As noted by AppleInsider, Best Buy also has had an iPad sale going on. They're offering a $50 discount on all iPad Air 2 models and between $50–100 off on iPad mini 3 models. AppleInsider's price guide gives you a quick overview on the discounts for the various models of the iPad mini 3.

An Interview with Catalyst on Designing the Perfect Waterproof iPhone Case

An Interview with Catalyst, on Desiging the Perfect Waterproof Case.

Do you ever stop and wonder how your favorite rugged waterproof iPhone case is designed and produced? I recently had the opportunity to chat with the owners and creative forces behind Catalyst, the manufacturer of my own favorite waterproof case; and from the sound of it, it's no simple matterThe conversation we had really shines a light on just how much energy, attention, and commitment to the highest standards are poured into their exceptional line of extreme duty cases.

The Catalyst case isn't just one of my favorite cases available for the iPhone, it's one of the best, equaling or surpassing its closest competition in the rugged, waterproof case arena. So when I had the chance to interview Josh Wright and June Lai for iPhone Life, I jumped at the chance, knowing it would give both our readers and me a unique glimpse into all the work that goes into crafting a case of such high quality.

iPhone Life: Waterproof cases for the iPhone seem to be one of the most challenging types of protective cases to design and build. What is the hardest part about designing a case that has to withstand stressful situations and higher levels of abuse?

June: We agree with that on many levels. We believe that a fully functional, everyday-use, waterproof case for the iPhone is the most challenging type of protective case to design and build. When you think about it, a regular case is simply a piece of plastic, rubber, metal or leather with cut-out holes for all the buttons, sensors, cameras, microphones and speakers. Our case is different. We fully cover every feature of the iPhone with a water and air tight housing and protection, and yet, all of the features of the iPhone work as normal, including the touchscreen, cameras, microphone, and speaker acoustics as well as the Touch ID. The final product is a precision engineered case and we perform relentless testing to make sure we bring you one of the highest performance cases on the market. The end result is a slim case that is waterproof to 5-meters and drop proof to two meters. These features fundamentally change how you are able to use your iPhone.

An Interview with Catalyst, on Desiging the Perfect Waterproof Case.Designing a case that has to withstand stressful situations and higher levels of abuse is not difficult for us. This goes back to our roots and the reason why we were one of the first to design fully functional waterproof cases. About four years ago, we spent most of our time outside climbing, swimming at the beach, or traveling and our iPhones had become an essential part of our gear. We looked on the market and couldn't find any cases that met our needs and Ziploc bags weren't going to cut it, so we created the protective waterproof case we wanted for our lifestyle and launched it on Kickstarter to test the market for our product.

If you've ever been hanging around on the side of a sheer rock face isolated from other people with a storm about to hit and facing an emergency rescue situation, you'd want to make sure you had a case that was slim enough to carry in your pocket, have a secure lanyard attachment point so it won't fall down the side of the cliff, be able to call for help so the acoustics have to work, take photos or share your location on a map so help can find you. These were the specs for our first waterproof case and we've continued to develop and improve every element with each generation of our cases.

iPL: What are some of your main considerations when designing a waterproof case?

Josh: From a technical standpoint, our case is made up of multiple individual component parts (anywhere from 24 to 42 parts depending on the version of the case) that are precisely made and assembled into the final product. One of our main considerations is that we love our high performance gear and sometimes use it well beyond its intended limits. Consequently, we over engineer our products to exceed our claims because we understand that sometimes our customers will push the limits too. We mostly use our cases in everyday life such as listening to podcasts in the shower, washing it when dirty or leaving it on the dinner table where a drink might spill. However, with proper maintenance, our case is also perfect for those times when we've gone rappelling through waterfalls or when our friend jumped off a 7-meter (25 foot) cliff into a 5-meter-deep jungle pool only to find his case had fallen out of his pocket and was sitting at the bottom of the pool for over an hour until he could rescue it. (This is the reason we encourage customers to use a Catalyst Floating Lanyard.)

One of the reasons why we have a higher waterproof specification than our competitors is that our case is completely air and water tight. When working on our first waterproof case, we found we had to invent our own unique acoustic technology for sound transmission in and out of the case that did not compromise the waterproof performance. Our cases employ our proprietary non-permeable membranes that are engineered and constructed to transmit sound into and out of the case while also being able to withstand higher pressure at depths.

An Interview with Catalyst, on Desiging the Perfect Waterproof Case.

iPL: Tell us about the process of actually getting a case like this fabricated. What's the process of evolution from drafting board to the consumer's hands?

June: Contrary to common belief, Apple does not provide case companies like us with inside information before a new device launches. Officially a project starts once Apple has released their developer specifications for cases and we start to build our design. Unofficially, we follow the rumors just like you and work on concepts long before the official announcement so we start with our best guess and can hit the ground running and adjust our models to the actual data when it is released by Apple.

When designing the case, we focus on finding the right balance between protection, functionality, and style. We love the design of the iPhone and we do not want to hide it in a fully covered housing, so we have always engineered our case so that it could be made of clear materials to showcase the iPhone rather than hide it. This creates more of an engineering challenge than you might think at first glance. Most products of this nature look “OK” on the outside, but when you open them up and look at the inside you will see a lot of details that the engineers built for the product's structure and injection processes. An example of this would be like the inside the battery door of a common remote control. On our case though it has to look good from the inside out in order to inject the plastic clear. If you look close, the front and the back of our case is completely clear with no visible defects, added structural ribs or tooling marks.

This level of simplicity is the result of carefully designing the product from the inside out. We never have our designers simply sketch what we want the case to look like then asking an engineer to figure out how to make it work. From the beginning, the engineers and designers work hand in hand to build every detail from the inside out. We obsess over the smallest details. Every fraction of a millimeter on each of its individual components is examined for functionality and its ability to be produced economically and consistently.

Since the looks and functionality of the case are just as important as protection, we minimize the use of bulky layers of materials to achieve protection. Actually, our case works more like a helmet with a hard shell (made from high impact polycarbonate) surrounding the iPhone with strategically placed internal foam and rubber bumpers to hold the phone securely in place. When is the last time you saw a football player or motorcyclist wearing a thick rubbery helmet? You don't because that's not how impact protection actually works. We wanted our case to be as thin and light as possible so you would actually want to take your case everywhere you go.

Josh: We build as many prototypes as needed till we feel all of the features come together in one tight stylish package. The development does not stop with prototypes. We continue to test and retest every element in our product until it's time to hit the go button and start mass production.

The end result is a minimal, purposeful product that showcases the iPhone inside a slim waterproof rugged housing. Catalyst is first and foremost committed to creating quality iconic products. Good design is a part of our DNA and we believe our cases are more than an accessory – they are an extension of your iPhone. If you've held one of our cases you know what this commitment to quality feels like.

iPL: Your waterproof cases surpass your competition in just about every category. That's pretty impressive. As makers of one the best rugged protection cases on the market, where would you like to see the Catalyst brand in say, four or five years, if all goes well?

June: We see Catalyst as a household name for waterproof accessories that are known for their quality and design. In the meantime, we plan to grow significantly and create many new products and product categories. For example, we recently introduced a new line of products that turn a waterproof sleeve into a portable ultra slim backpack or shoulder tote. Since we live in an area where we have rainstorms unexpectedly, our sleeves make it really easy to carry your tablet or laptop anywhere and if it rains, your valuables stay safe and dry. Even if you’re out for a meeting or a coffee you never have to choose between having your technology with you at all times and keeping it protected from the elements.

iPL: Thank you for your time, we are big fans of the Catalyst brand here at iPhone Life and we are happy to see you folks doing so well and meeting with such success!

Josh: We want to thank iPhone Life following us since our first humble roots on Kickstarter. We value all of the feedback you have provided and a lot of the improvements that showed up in our successful new products have been based upon great comments and reviews like yours.

1.Data Robot (Free from $.99)

Free for a short time only, Data Robot is similar to a speed test app, but it measures your data speed in real situations. Unlike other speed test apps, Data Robot doesn not work by using a false data file to send to an internet service provider to measure speed. It measures your actual download or upload speed as you are downloading or uploading something. You can also use it to measure your LTE connection and Wi-Fi AC connection and how much LTE, 4G or 3G cellular data you have used.

2.Simple Physics (Free from $1.99)

This is a structure-building game that asks you to construct durable structures like tree houses, staircases, or a sturdy roof. You can then put it through a series of tests to make sure it's safe. This is a fun way to test your engineering skills before you take on a real project.

3. Shortcuts Keyboard(Free from $.99)

Do you find yourself texting the same phrases frequently? This keyboard app allows you to use text-based shortcuts to use your most repeated phrases with just a single tap. So, if you frequently text a friend to say "What's up?" you can do it with one tap instead of typing it all out. It works for any type of message regardless of length.

I’m a pretty patient person, but when it comes to Music, I want to be able to switch playlists and songs quickly. I’m usually working out or driving while I listen to music, and I need to be able to quickly change what I’m listening to at a stoplight or in between sets. That's why it's a good idea to customize the bottom toolbar in the Music app to show what you use most, instead of having to click More for the extended menu.

To arrange the toolbar to your liking, tap More and then Edit.

Product Review: Wahoo Fitness TICKR X Heart Rate Monitor/Workout Tracker

Oh how I love me some fitness gadgets! When Wahoo sent me this heart rate monitor to review, my heart skipped a beat because this thing is cool. The wireless training tools market is growing fast these days. I think everyone is tired of having a bunch of gear that requires a degree in engineering to figure out how to use, so to have something like the Wahoo Fitness TICKR X ($99.99) is pretty great since it works right out of the box.

The TICKR X connects with your iPhone or smart watch to offer a comprehensive athletic training tool. It transmits real-time distance, heart rate, calories burned, and length of workout. It also has motion analytics so you can get feedback on how smooth your stride is while you run.

What sets the TICKR X apart?

Unlike so many other heart rate monitors out there, this one actually has its own built in memory. You can track your workouts even without your iPhone, which is really kind of neat. I always have my phone on me, but if you're not into strapping your phone on your arm or stuffing it into a pocket when you go out for a run or a bike ride, you don't have to. Just use the TICKR X alone. When you get home, you can view your workout stats by syncing your phone with any one of over 50 compatible training apps.

Does it work?

I tested the TICKR X on the treadmill at the gym on the treadmill setting. My first impressions were really good. For all it does, it's a pretty simple device to use. It's just a sensor on a heart rate strap with a ANT+/Bluetooth transmitter. It was very easy to sync with the Wahoo fitness app I had already installed on my iPhone.

Once you link everything up, you choose what kind of workout you're doing. If you're going out on the road, there's GPS to track your route and distance. There's an audio announcement feature, a way to choose some tunes, and a way to start and pause a workout.

With a double tap on the device, you can do all kinds of things by setting a predetermined operation. For example, if you'd like your song to change or play louder, you can set your monitor to respond in that way when you double tap it.

You can also use the double tap to pause a workout. I love this feature because it's so much easier than having to whip out my phone to skip a song or crank up the volume. The only problem is that it seems to be a little bit sensitive to being bumped around and responds when I haven't tapped it. It's probably extra responsive so we don't have people beating themselves in the chest at the gym.

Chest beating at the gym is not acceptable behavior.

The goal is to control your circle by tapping on the screen to make it jump to the point where you want it to be. The challenge is strategizing where to tap and the level of force of your tap as one mistake will be equivalent to a lost life. Tip of the Day: Unlock Your iPhone by Writing Your Passcode With Your Finger

Apple’s VoiceOver feature is designed for those who are visually impaired. When the feature is turned on, a voice will let users know what is on the screen and allow them to navigate their iDevice. However, VoiceOver can also be used by anyone to unlock their iPhones by drawing their passcodes with their fingerespecially those who are jealous of the ability of Android users to unlock their phones by drawing on their lock screen.

To set this up, go to Settings > General > Accessibility, then scroll down and tap on Accessibility Shortcut. Tap on VoiceOver to activate the triple-click shortcut for this feature. Now you can turn VoiceOver on and off by triple clicking the Home button.

Next, go back to Accessibility and go to VoiceOver > Rotor and make sure Handwriting is checked. (The Rotor will let you access any of the checked options by rotating two fingers on the screen as if you were turning an actual dial until it says the option you want.)

Then, when it’s time to enter your password, triple click the Home button to activate VoiceOver and turn the Rotor until it says Handwriting. Now you can use your finger to draw the numbers of your passcode on the screen.

For most of us, this is just a fun way to unlock our iPhones. For those who are visually impaired and using an iDevice that doesn't have Touch ID, this is a great way to keep your passcode private. Otherwise, VoiceOver will read the passcode as you type it in, loud and clear for all to hear.

Tip of the Day: Have Siri Tell You a Story

$

Siri is wonderfully useful, giving you directions, current weather conditions, and stock market updates, setting appointments and reminders, and much more. But as you've likely discovered, Siri also has a fun personality—including telling you jokes and even telling you a bedtime story.

To get Siri to tell you her bedtime story, you need to be persistent. Say, "Tell me a story." And Siri will typically say something like, "I'm certain you've heard it before." So then ask again. She'll say something like, "I'm sure I've already told you," or "What, again?"

Also try asking, "Tell me a bedtime story." If you're lucky, Siri will relent and tell you a short story about an intelligent young agent named Siri in a virtual galaxy far, far away.

In addition, Siri has a small repertoire of jokes. Here are some queries you can try that will keep you chuckling:

  • Tell me a joke
  • Tell me a riddle
  • Knock knock
  • Why did the chicken cross the road?
  • How much wood could a woodchuck chuck?
  • What is the meaning of life? (Siri's typical answer to this one makes more sense if you're familiar with The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.)
  • Talk dirty
  • Beam me up
  • Open the pod bay doors, Hal (a reference to the movie 2001 a Space Odyssey)

Siri usually has multiple responses to these, so try them more than once. You'll also get clever responses if you ask Siri personal questions about herself.

Apple Again Airs Touching Holiday Ad

Apple's holiday ad last year, titled "Misunderstood," won an Emmy for "Most Outstanding Commercial." It featured a boy playing with his iPhone over the course of a holiday family gathering, seemingly on the periphery, and keeping to himself. But all the while he was shooting and editing a video of the family's activities, which he then played for everyone — and touched their hearts. This year's ad, titled "The Song," is equally moving.

A young woman stumbles across a vinyl recording that her grandmother made decades earlier for her new husband when he had to be away for the holidays. The young woman puts it on the turntable and is so touched by it, that she digitizes it and adds accompaniment and harmonizing using her MacBook, guitar, and keyboard. She then leaves it as a Christmas present.

On Christmas morning, her grandmother finds an iPad mini on the kitchen table with a note telling her to press Play. The grandmother puts in the earphones, presses play, and gets tears in her eyes, remembering the song and her husband, all the while looking at photos of them in their youth that the young woman had also left on the table. While the grandmother listens, the young woman sits quietly at the top of the staircase smiling and watching her grandmother enjoy the gift.

The 90-second ad closes with "Happy Holidays" and then the Apple logo.

Holiday Gift Guide: Good, Better, Best

Every year, around this time, people ask me what they should get as a gift for some tech lover in their life. So I put together a presentation entitled Todd's Holiday Gift Guide: Good/Better/Best. This way, purchasers can decide what their budget is and pick out an appropriate gift! The categories I addressed include Headphones, Wireless Speakers, Stylus, Chargers, Docks, Smart Home Devices, and Smart Watches.

For the music lover, a wired headphone is important. Bluetooth cannot always meet their demands, so I recommend two wired headphones and another that can operate via Bluetooth or an included wire. The Good solution is from Bell'o Digital. Even their low-end headphones use quality materials, are comfortable, and produce quality sound. I had the audio equivalent of the Pepsi Challenge, while attending CE Week, and listened to the same music on the same phone, but with a variety of high-priced headphones. The Bell'o Digital headphones were more comfortable and sounded the best. Since their BDH21 headphones start at a very reasonable $60, they make a no-brainer gift.

If you want premium materials to go with premium sound, I've always been a fan of Bang-Olufsen. I bought my first B&O headphones in 1988, for a whopping $99. For a college student, that was a lot, but for B&O, that's a bargain. It's hard to walk out of a B&O store and not spend thousands, so spending about $100 on headphone is a great way to get a taste of high-end, high-quality audio design. As a testament to the longevity of good design, B&O still sells that same model of headphones, updated to include an in-line microphone, and with an upgraded price of $129, but I'd recommend springing for their $199 H2 model that has nicer materials, and uses a single wire instead of two. Finally, the best option for headphones, especially if you want the option to go wireless, is the SMS Audio SYNC line, endorsed by 50 Cent. You can even spend a little more and get the STAR WARS branded versions!

BabyTime App Helps Parents and Care Givers Track Baby’s Health and Well-Being

$

You can talk to any parent and they can surely tell you a thing or two about the "adventures" of taking care of a baby. Every parent wants to figure out how they can ease and comfort their little bundle of joy so as not to wake the whole block or to sneak away for some moments of that precious thing called sleep.

Australian-based development studio, Enhancient, had launched a new app to give our loving parents a hand and turn this chapter of their lives into a more memorable one.

BabyTime allows users to record nursing, bottle-feeding, sleep, and diaper change information which can be synced and shared to other devices and other people. In storing these data, users can start looking at trends of their baby’s behavior and would be able to do the necessary if there is a need. Looking at sleeping patterns for example, if you find that it is erratic, you can work on addressing this to benefit you and your baby.

You can also monitor multiple profiles using one account in BabyTime and the app has a night mode functionality to prevent glares from your sleeping co-parent if you need to use it in the wee hours of the morning.

BabyTime is very user-friendly in terms of design and usability. It has a single-screen interface and you can go about your recording with single taps. It is designed for one-hand operation because the developers know that you have your baby in your other hand.

There are three main icons that you will be using in this app:

  • Bottle / Breast feeding Icon — clicking on the Breast feeding icon will track the time you spent feeding on each breast so you can remember which side you last fed on and for how long. It can be switched to the Bottle icon if you want to track formula or expressed breast milk (EBM).

  • Moon Icon  click on this to track how long your baby sleeps to get information on patterns and trends.

  • Diaper Icon  clicking on this will give you two options: wet or dirty. This is used to monitor how many full diapers are produced by your baby to learn if feeding is enough.

BabyTime is an essential tool to analyze trends over time to help you make intelligent decisions, rather than guesses, when training your precious one to settle to a certain routine. This app is made by parents for parents so you can focus more on matters most.

BabyTime is available in the App Store for a special introductory price of $2.99. It is operable on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.

I have written about native app replacements before when it was time to change your calendar. Now, it's time to change your Reminders app.

Try Checkmark 2 ($2.99). It's easier to schedule a reminder with this app, and feels way less cluttered. You can make lists, set location-based reminders, and create recurring reminders. It even comes with it's own reminder tones! The best feature is the interactive widgets that go along with it, housed in your "Today" view in the pull-down notifications center. It's easy to swipe right and left to delete the notification or mark the reminder as "complete."

Even though it has the same functions as the native application, it just seems better because it is less busy and easier to schedule reminders. And sometimes, that's all you need.

Biggest downside? It doesn't work with Siri. So my days of asking her to remind me to do something are over, but it will be easier to schedule reminders with Checkmark 2. Hopefully, I won't even notice.

Tip of the Day: Use Siri to Find Movie Ratings and Theater Info and to Watch Trailers

Everyone likes movies. And no one likes wasting time on the lousy ones. So no doubt you check out the reviews to see what people are saying about it. Siri can help. Siri will not only let you find out what's playing at local theaters and play the trailer, but will also tell you how a movie is rated.

To find out how a movie is rated, simply tell Siri, "Show me the ratings for the movie [and then say the name of the movie]." Siri will return a rating from Rotten Tomatoes as well as a long list of comments from movie critics.

(Inexplicably, when I ask for ratings or reviews of the movie Dumb and Dumber To, which is currently in theaters, the first few comments are for the earlier movie rather than the sequel.)

To find out what movies are playing, simply ask Siri, "What movies are playing?" and Siri will show you the movies playing at local theaters.

Once you've selected a movie, you can also access the reviews by clicking on the ratings section in the lower right of the listing.

You can also ask Siri to show you the trailer for a movie. Simply say, "Show me the trailer for [movie name]." Siri will play the trailer and return you to a screen that gives all the details of the movie.

Holiday Gift Guide: Wireless Speakers

This is part two of my Holiday Gift Guide. Part one covered headphones and today's topic is Wireless Speakers. For the low-end "Good" selection, I like the Boombotix REX. The sound is good and it comes from a compact yet robust package. It's durable and water resistant, with all ports sealed by rubber flaps. There's a strong belt clip so you can take the Boombotix with you and not worry about the weather.

For the Better category, I like the Life N Soul BM211 portable speaker. Music can be provided by Bluetooth, or the included audio jack, or even by a USB drive. It offers virtual surround sound, thanks to adjustable speakers and a slot to keep your tablet. It works well as a conference room speakerphone thanks to the built-in microphone and one-touch answer/hang-up button. The slot makes it convenient to use with Facetime or VoIP apps.

The Best wireless speaker solution is from SONOS. I had the opportunity to install a complete, $1,000 configuration of three of their speakers in a friend's house. The SONOS speakers use their own wireless network instead of Bluetooth or your Internet router's WiFi, so the sound is great and there's no interference with your browsing. The SONOS app can access music from tons of online radio stations as well as traditional music sources. The best part of the SONOS solution is you can have each speaker playing music from a different source, or the same content. Because it's wireless, aside from AC power, you can easily create a surround sound home theater.

Swift Programming 101: The Power of Extensions

Extensions are one of Swift's best features. Extensions allow you to add behavior to existing classes, including classes in the Cocoa Touch Framework. Apple can't add every feature you want to their framework classes, but they have provided a tool to allow you to do it yourself! In this article, you will learn practical uses for Swift extensions you can use immediately in your iOS projects.

Swift Extensions

Swift's extensions allow you to extend classes, structures and enumerations without creating a subclass. It's better to create an extension to add functionality to a Cocoa Touch Framework class than to create a subclass, because it allows you to use the standard Cocoa Touch class throughout your app. For example, if you add an extension to the NSURL class, you can still use NSURL throughout your app. You don't have to remember to use a custom subclass in some places and NSURL in others.

You can add these items to a type using extensions:

  • Instance and type methods
  • Computed instance and computed type properties
  • Initializers
  • Subscripts
  • Conformance to a protocol

Here is the basic syntax for declaring an extension in Swift:

Creating Custom Extensions

To see how Swift extensions work, let's add a new method to Swift's String class.

By default, String has no method that tells you the number of times one string occurs in another string. For example, you may want to know how many commas are in a string. Since String doesn't have this method, you can add it using an extension.

I've already created an extension for you. Download the ExtensionsDemo sample project at this link so you can take a look.

  1. After downloading the ExtensionsDemo project, open it in Xcode.
  1. Select the StringExtensions.swift file in the Project Navigator to see the following extension declaration:

The extension keyword is followed by the name of the class being extended—in this case, String. The extension declares an occurrencesOfString method that accepts a String parameter named aString. This is the string you are searching for. The return value is an Int that contains the number of times aString is found in the string you are testing. Within this method, self refers to the string object you are searching!

  1. Let's see how this extension works at run time. In the Project Navigator, expand the ExtensionsDemoTests.swift file. This file contains the testExtension method:

  1. The StringExtensions.swift class is not included in the unit test project's target. To verify this, type the letters s.o after the constant declaration:

The occurrencesOfString method doesn't appear in Code Completion, because the extension hasn't been included in the unit test target. Let's change that.

  1. Select StringExtensions.swift in the Project Navigator. Go to the File Inspector on the right side of the Xcode window, and under Target Membership, select the ExtensionsDemoTests check box (Figure 1).
Figure 1 - Select the ExtensionDemoTests target.
  1. Select the ExtensionDemoTests.swift file in the Project Navigator. Enter the code s.o and the occurrencesOfString method appears in Code Completion (Figure 2).
The method in Code Completion
Figure 2 - The String extension appears in Code Completion!
  1. Add the following code to the testExtension method:

This code checks the number of times "the" appears in the string. It should appear twice!

  1. Set a breakpoint by clicking in the gutter to the left of the second line of code (Figure 3).
Set a breakpoint
Figure 3 - Set a breakpoint on the second line of code.
  1. To run this method, go to the Test Navigator by clicking the fifth button from the left in the Navigator toolbar. Then click the arrow to the right of the ExtensionDemoTests node (Figure 4).
Run the unit test
Figure 4 - Run the unit test.
  1. When you hit the breakpoint, click the Step over button in the Debug toolbar and the count variable is set to 2 in the Variables View (Figure 5).
Two occurrences have been found
Figure 5 - Two occurrences have been found.
  1. Click the Continue button in the Debug toolbar and Xcode indicates the testExtension method has passed.

Adding Computed Properties

Swift's extensions can add computed instance and type properties, but they can't add stored proeprties or property observers to existing properties.

Let's look at an extension that adds a computed instance property to the UIImage Cocoa Touch class.

  1. In Xcode, select File > Open and navigate to the folder where you downloaded this post's sample code. Drill down into the ExtensionsDemo project, select the Extensions.playground file and click Open.
  1. The playground contains the following extension of the UIImage class:

This extension contains a single property named halfSizeImage. It takes the existing image (if any) and returns a half-size version of it. Let's give it a try.

  1. Add the following code to the bottom of the playground:

This code creates a UIImage object from the Book4iOS8.png file, which I have added to this playground's resources. When you enter this code, the image size is displayed in the playgrounds sidebar (Figure 6).

Figure 6 - The image is 250 x 327
  1. Hover your mouse pointer to the right of the image size and click on the Quick Look icon (the eye) to see the image (Figure 7).
Figure 7 - Hover over the Quick View icon to view the image.
  1. Now add the following code to the storyboard that references the halfSizeImage extension property:

  1. When you enter this new line of code, the sidebar displays the size of the new image returned from the computed property, half the original size (Figure 8).
The half-size image
Figure 8 - The half-size image is 125x164
  1. Hover your mouse pointer to the right of the new line of code and click the Quick View button to see the half-size image (Figure 9).
Quick View shows the half-size image
Figure 9 - Quick View shows the half-size image

The extension's computed property is working!

Adding Subscripts

Extensions.playground contains another extension that demonstrates how to add a subscript to an existing class:

This subscript accepts an integer index value and returns the character at that index.

  1. Add the following code to the bottom of the playground to test this extension:

  1. This code creates a String variable containing 26 characters, then requests the character at position 0. The results sidebar shows the values in Figure 10.
Figure 10 - The subscript extension at work!

This is exactly right. The first character in the string is the letter B.

Try experimenting with other values, including negative numbers and numbers greater than 25. The subscript returns nil in both cases.

Extension Rules

Here are a few more things to note about extensions:

  • You can add more than one member to a class in a single extension.
  • It's a best practice to add related methods to a single extension.
  • There is no limit to the number of extensions you can add to a class.
  • Members added to a class by an extension are inherited by subclasses.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you can see the power of extensions and how they can be applied in practical ways to make your day-to-day coding easier. Extensions allow you to solve a problem once and reuse the solution many times in multiple iOS projects. Remember, it's a best practice to create extensions rather than subclassing Cocoa Touch Framework classes where possible!
