Tip of the Day: Quickly Create an Album of Your Favorite Photos

$
0
0

There are many new features available to you in iOS 8 in the Photos and Camera apps. When you're viewing an individual photo, one nice new feature is the ability to designate it as a favorite. Then those photos that you've identified as favorites are automatically collected into an album titled Favorites.

To mark a photo as a favorite, simply tap on the heart icon, shown here at the top in the Photos app on my iPad. (I believe it's at the bottom of the photo on an iPhone.)

Those that you've indicated as favorites show up as a Favorites album in the album view in Photos.

Open that album, and you'll see all your favorite photos.

Best Black Friday Deals for iPads

$

The iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 are only about a month old, yet you can snag some serious discounts this Black Friday, thanks to Best Buy and Target. If you don't want to join the crowds the day after Thanksgiving, or even Thanksgiving evening, you might be able to get the same deal using their websites.

Target's discounts come in the form of a Target gift card, which isn't a bad deal, given how many useful items they sell. Buyers of newer iPads will get a $100 gift card with purchase, or $80 for the oldest iPad mini. This makes the iPad mini 2 (originally called the iPad mini with Retina display) the best deal. For $299 (MSRP) you get a $100 Target gift card, making the effective price just $199 for a decent iPad mini. The original iPad mini is $249, and a $80 gift card comes with the deal, making an effective price of $169. For $30 more, I'd step up to the newer iPad mini 2 Retina model which has the same guts as the original iPad Air.

If you're looking for a full size, state-of-the-art iPad, Target offers a $140 gift card with purchase of the $499 iPad Air 2, bringing its effective price to $359. If you don't want the hassle of a gift card, BestBuy will be cutting $100 off the price of the iPad Air 2, so those models will start at $399.

For my money, these are the best deals you'll find on the current generation iPad. Indeed, I picked up the original iPad Air last year at BestBuy's Black Friday sale with a similar discount, and plan to pickup another iPad mini 2 from Target this year. These deals are subject to change and better deals might pop up between now and Black Friday. A good source to check regularly is BFAds.net and their companion app.

Enhance Your Life with Smart Bulbs from Connected By TCP

I'd been wanting to start smartening up my home, so when I received an email offering a free sample of smart light bulbs from Connected By TCP, I jumped at the opportunity. And I couldn't be more pleased with them. During these dark winter months, it can be pretty dreary arriving home in the evening after dark. In the past I'd sometimes turn on my porch light when I left home in the afternoon, knowing that I'd be arriving home in the dark and could avoid fumbling to get the key in the door. But it always seemed a waste to have the light on for hours.

I've now configured the LED bulbs from Connected by TCP so that my porch light and a living room light both go on about 15 minutes before the time I typically arrive home. I can't tell you what a difference that simple thing makes — how much friendlier it makes my home feel.

The company sent me their starter kit that includes a "gateway" and two A19 LED bulbs. The gateway is about the size of a deck of cards and connects to a wireless router. I was confused at first why I needed this gateway or base station, but I came to understand that when one is configuring the bulbs to turn on and off at certain times, one is actually configuring the gateway, which then communicates wirelessly to the bulbs. Interestingly, the Connected gateway uses a wireless protocol different from Wi-Fi or bluetooth.

After you connect the gateway to your wireless router, you then use the free TCP Lighting app on your iPhone or iPad to configure the bulbs. You can schedule them, adjust the brightness, and even control and configure them remotely when you're away from home. You need a Wi-Fi connection to configure the bulbs with your device, but once the gateway has been configured, it will continue to communicate with the bulbs even if you don't have an Internet connection.

The basic starter kit sells for $80, and can be purchased online on Amazon for around $70. Additional bulbs are $19. There are smart bulb options that don't use a gateway or base station and that you configure with your iOS device using bluetooth, but they're generally much more expensive per bulb.

You can purchase Connected By TCP bulbs for every room in your house and control them with a single gateway. The bulbs themselves can act as repeaters for the wireless signal, meaning that you can use them in rooms quite distant from the gateway, as long as there are also bulbs that are closer to the gateway.

I really like the quality of light from the Connected By TCP LED bulbs. Most of my fixtures have CFL bulbs, and I've never liked them. I'm planning to buy more Connected By TCP bulbs.

Review: Inbox by Google App

Google has changed Gmail again.

This time, I had to wait a few weeks to get invited to the "Inbox" club—Google's new app for Gmail—which has turned my email on its head. Once I got the invite, I was finally able to log into the app with my Google account.

I do have to admit that the navigation is a little confusing at first. You have four options after you read an email:

  • Pin it. This keeps a collection of emails on a "pin" page so you can find them quickly.
  • Snooze it. The email will come back into your inbox later, whenever you want it to.
  • Mark as done. This is the most confusing of the four. I think this just archives emails?
  • Move it. You can move it to Inbox's new "bundled" options (kind of like tabs) or to your own label.

The coolest feature? Google has meshed reminders with email. So now, when I am looking at my email (like I do about 10 times per day), I can see that I should be writing that paper or emailing someone back. Another aspect I really like is that I can view Gmail labels more easily than in Apple mail. If you're like me, and use labels religiously, then this is one of the best features of Inbox.

The biggest downside? I think it is a little too simplistic. The labels aren't noted on each email like they are in the Gmail iOS app, and from what I can tell, my email signature has been missing since I switched to Inbox. Luckily, you can still use your regular Gmail inbox on the web, which I will continue to do.

Overall, if you see your email as a to-do list, this is the experience for you. It's simple, fast, and time-efficient.

It's easy to get an invite—just email inbox@google.com and your invitation will show up, eventually. This app is available on the App Store and the web.

Walmart Black Friday Deals Include iPhone 6 for $104

Black Friday deals are coming soon, and websites are beginning to post the details. AppleInsider has all the info on Walmart's deals, which include an iPhone 6 for $179 plus a $75 gift card, meaning that your final price is effectively $104. They also have iPad deals, such as the first-generation 16 GB iPad Air for $397 with a $100 gift card.

Their various deals kick in at different times over the holiday. The first event starts at 6 pm on Thursday, November 27, with a 16 GB first-generation iPad mini for $199 with a $30 gift card. The second event starts at 8 p.m. on Thursday, and includes the iPad deal mentioned above. In addition, a 16 GB iPod touch will go for $179 with a $30 gift card. Then on Friday at 6 a.m. Walmart will be offering the iPhone deal mentioned above, plus the iPhone 5s for $79 with a $75 gift card.

Of course, the iPhone deals require a two-year contract. And in every case, supplies are limited, as is usual for Black Friday deals.

During the events Walmart will also be offering deals on Beats headphones and speakers, as well as a $30 iTunes gift card for $25.

First Official New Beats Gear Under Apple Released

$

It's unlikely that Apple had much role in designing the new Beats headphones that were released today, given the product design lifecycle, but they are the first Beats products announced since Apple acquired the firm for $3 billion this summer. The Solo2 Wireless headphonesoperate via Bluetooth and offer 12 hours of battery life. A RemoteTalk cable can be used to turn the wireless headphones into wired ones, complete with an inline microphone. This is useful if the battery dies runs out, or for Airplane Mode use.

At $299.95 for the wireless versions ($199.95 for a wired model) these aren't cheap, but they are priced in the expected range for Beats products. Actually, the older, gold-trimmed Beats Studio wireless headphones are on sale for $341.95 (normally $379.95), so for about $50 more, those might be a better purchase. Of course, there are decent Bluetooth headphones for $50 to $100 so these may really be for brand snobs!

Solo2

Speaking of brand preferences, Beats has gotten a ton of free publicity thanks to competitor Bose. The NFL has an exclusive contract with Bose to be the official headphone provider for the football league. But players who prefer Beats have faced fines of $10,000 and some players have resorted placing black electrical tape over the Beats logos to avoid the penalty. All of this led to Beats founder and new Apple employee Jimmy Iovine to thank Bose for the unpaid publicity. When unpaid spokesmen who can afford any headphone would rather use your brand, that's a great testimonial. Sure enough, I was on a plane this weekend with a 6.5-foot basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks and on his head were Beats headphones.

Tip of the Day: Use Siri to Add Reminders to Specific Lists

$

When you ask Siri to remind you about something, like your car payment, Siri automatically adds the reminder to the default Reminders list. But if you want the reminder added to a different list, that's possible too. You just have to phrase your request a little differently.

If you want the item added to a specific Reminders list, instead of saying "Remind me to buy milk," say something like, "Add milk to my Shopping List" or "Add car payment to my Monthly Bills list," instead.

Which Will Come Next, Apple Watch or an iPad Pro?

$
0
0

Apple is scaling their product line, both bigger and smaller. Apple simultaneously introduced a bigger 4.7-inch iPhone and an even bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus and the 1.5 to 1.65-inch Apple Watch. While that Apple Watch won't ship until early Spring, there have been rumors of a larger iPad, potentially dubbed the iPad Pro, with a 12.9-inch screen. Apple did indeed introduce new iPads a month after the iPhone and Apple Watch, but they kept the same screen sizes.

A larger iPad could overlap with Apple's 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air, especially when paired with a clamshell Bluetooth keyboard, which is how I usually use my iPad Air. Other companies might not be so anxious to create a separate product that could cannibalize their other product line, especially if the new product is cheaper, as it likely would be, but Apple "thinks different." They have, throughout their history, created new products that competed with their cash cow, but they feel it's better that Apple does so than a competitor.

MacBook Air

In the case of the iPad Pro, however, that change may not happen as soon as expected. Apple Insider expects a larger iPad to slip to the second quarter of 2015, which means the Apple Watch will be the "next big thing" from Apple. In fact, overall sales of iPads may not be at the level Apple wants. There is not a single compelling reason to upgrade from an iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina display. Apple products retain their value, which is a blessing and a curse. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus introduced Apple Pay, thanks to Near Field Communication. That could be a compelling "killer app" and a reason for iPhone 5 owners to upgrade. Touch ID is the biggest hardware change for the iPad line and that doesn't have a killer app yet. Perhaps if Apple allowed multiple users to have different profiles, all keyed to their thumbprint, then that would be compelling. Of course, that might mean it's easier to share one iPad among family members instead of buying one for everyone!

Wellograph Tries to Find a Niche Between Fitness Band and Smart Watch

There has never been a better time for fans of smart watches and fitness bands. The Apple Watch validates the market, yet has enough shortcomings that it leaves room for competitors. I've worn a Pebble since they were available and I appreciate many of the features it offers, but it's getting a little long in the tooth. It doesn't offer any of the health sensors that are so popular these days.

Fortunately, Wellograph has an offering that is a lot like my Pebble, but it has sensors to track my pulse and my steps and activity. And the large sapphire screen displays real-time graphs of that data. The Wellograph ($349) can keep you well by bugging you if you've been inactive too long The Wellograph can do a lot of things independent of an iPhone, but of course it's better when the Wellograph app is on my iPhone.

Wellograph

The Wellograph battery lasts about a week, thanks to the e-paper style display. Like the Pebble, the Wellograph has a special magnetic charger to power the device without trying to insert a microUSB connector, which many other "smart" watches resort to. You can also swap out the included genuine brown or black leather band, which might be a good idea for athletic users. The watch component is a little weak as it doesn't offer alarms, but if you have your iPhone handy that might be sufficient.

The Wellograph is priced like the Apple's upcoming watch, but unlike the Apple Watch, the Wellograph screen is not a touchscreen, nor does it have color, and it doesn't run apps; but that's part of the reason it can last a week without charging. But also unlike the Apple Watch, the Wellograph is available today. If you're looking for a fitness band that works like a watch but also looks subtle, then the Wellograph could fit the bill.

Rumor: Production of Apple Watch Components Set to Begin

$

According to the Taiwanese publication DigiTimes, which has fairly good sources but isn't always reliable, production of the custom-designed chip for the forthcoming Apple Watch is about to begin. This is a good sign, suggesting that this new accessory from Apple is on track for an early 2015 release. Some recent rumors have slated it for February 14, though an internal company video suggested it would arrive in the spring.

DigiTimes' sources said that Apple is estimated to have ordered some 30–40 million of the chips, indicating that the company is expecting to sell a lot of Apple Watches in the first few months. By way of comparison, AppleInsider notes that Samsung sold 800,000 Galaxy Gear smartwatches the first two months they were on sale. Prices will start at $349, with the gold Apple Watch Edition rumored to cost some $5,000.

One big question is the upgrade cycle for this new device, especially if you're buying the gold watch. What happens when the technology becomes obsolete in a couple years, as frequently happens with other devices? Apple will certainly come out with new iterations of the device, so will you then be willing to spend another $5,000 two years down the road?

Some have speculated that the new system-on-a-chip that Apple is touting for the device will simply be replaceable. You'll keep your gold casing, and plop in a new chip. Apple has custom-designed the chip such that all the computing subsystems are on a single chip that's encapsulated in resin to protect the electronics from the elements, impact, and wear.

My fellow blogger Todd Bernhard has suggested that Apple may instead offer a buy-back program, in which you send in your watch. They would disassemble it and upgrade it. Or they might simply send you a new unit and sell your old one as a refurb. It would be similar to what often happens with warranty repairs. This actually makes more sense, because it's hard to imagine that Apple would feel comfortable with people taking apart their watches.

Tip of the Day: How to Remove Contacts from the App Switcher

In iOS 8 you can now quickly access your contacts via the App Switcher by double clicking the Home Button. If you don't want to look at a list of your favorite and most recent contacts every time you use the App Switcher, or if you don't want anyone else to easily see who you call or text most often, you can disable the feature in settings.

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and scroll down to Contacts. Tap on Show in App Switcher and toggle Phone Favorites and Recents off. Your contacts will no longer appear in the App Switcher window.

If you are like me, then I bet you are perpetually wasting a good amount of time overturning everything trying to find the thing that you swore you kept some place which you cannot recall at that moment.

I am sure that people who have just moved to a new place can also relate to how frustrating it is to rummage through dozens of boxes to look for a single drinking glass only to give up, parched, out of frustration.

Sortly (free) makes organization simple as it gives users visual records of the things they own and they can organize them in just few swipes and taps.

Sortly

The things that you have added in your inventory are also easily located with its advanced search capability using the tags and notes you have added in your photos. You also have the option to share lists to your friends or use it to record your assets for insurance purposes and be at peace as all your files are backed up to a secure cloud.

The app allows you to simply type in a tag if you need to locate a missing item.

To start your Sortly journey, choose the location of where your item is and name it, snap a photo of it, add your tags in and enter more notes if needed. Sortly also lets you add subfolders so packaging items for your storage unit may look like this:

Storage >> Brown Box 1 >> Nana’s Jewelry Box >> Peacock Brooch

You can also purchase Sortly premium ($0.99 a month, $9.99 a year, or $39.99 for a lifetime) which includes the ability to export to Dropbox, PDF, and Evernote, unlimited items, and the highest privacy and data protection.

Worried About Masque? Trust but Verify!

$
0
0

There's a security alert going around about "Masque" attacks, which poses a potential threat to iOS users but, according to Apple, has not resulted in any problems so far. Masque takes advantage of Apple's iOS Enterprise Developer program which bypasses the official App Store to let businesses install apps on their employees' iOS devices.

"Sideloading" of apps is done frequently on the Android side, and is a way to get access to apps that might not be approved by Google. Apple's approach is safer than Google because businesses have to prove they are legitimate, providing their D.U.N.S. number (a hassle I've had to go through a few times) and pay an annual fee of $300. It's a safeguard that should keep away most hackers. If a business does go through that process, they can send a web link to users to install the app and not have to deal with Apple's approval process. For example, there are U.S. Army apps that have no place in the App Store but the government can distribute them to soldiers. IBM has recently launched a partnership with Apple to develop iOS Enterprise apps (on top of the 100 they already have) but this program lets them control the distribution. This is a good thing for businesses. There is no delay due to app reviews and highly specialized apps don't clutter the already cluttered App Store.

However, the potential for a hacker to create a malicious app that masks as a trusted one is real, just very rare. Apple feels their security prevents Masque from becoming a problem, but it's just one more thing for iOS users to be aware of. Before installing such apps, a user would be prompted up to four times that this could be a problem before they change their security settings and allow the app to install. For now, common sense says be careful and only install apps from the App Store. If your employer offers custom apps, check with your I.T. department. Here's what Apple had to say to iMore regarding Masque:

"We designed OS X and iOS with built-in security safeguards to help protect customers and warn them before installing potentially malicious software. We're not aware of any customers that have actually been affected by this attack. We encourage customers to only download from trusted sources like the App Store and to pay attention to any warnings as they download apps. Enterprise users installing custom apps should install apps from their company's secure website."

Tip of the Day: How to Take Panoramic Shots with Your iPhone

$
0
0

Whenever I see a breathtaking landscape, my first instinct is to pull out my iPhone and attempt to capture a picture of it. So many times I’ve snapped away with my camera, brimming with excitement, only to look into my Camera Roll and find that my pictures were disappointing at best. After all, there’s only so much you can capture in a standard photo.

That’s what panoramas are for.

I admit, I often forget this is even an option, but the Panorama mode in the Camera app is perfect for these exact moments.

In order to access the Panorama feature, open you Camera app, scroll through your Options, and choose Pano. You’ll see instructions appear on the screen. The key to great panoramas is to take things slow and steady. Don’t get impatient and rush through the process or your pictures won’t turn out as well.

Also, if you want a more encompassing shot but feel that the 240-degree photo is overkill, you can stop taking your picture at any desired point by pressing the shutter button.

iPhone Life's Top 20 Headphones of 2014

To make it onto this list, headphones must shine in the following areas: They must be exceptionally comfortable, they must be well built and they must have superior sonic quality. No earphones that have to be inserted into the ear are included in this list and any Bluetooth headphones featured have to include a microphone for convenient conversing. Sounds simple enough right? Well, it would be, except for the fact that there are so many great headphone options out there. Coming up with a condensed list of 20 headphones to highlight out of the hundreds of great choices on the market was no easy task, but after a year spent studying the intricacies and nuances of a great many headphones, this list represents 2014's cream of the crop.

Smartphone and tablet users tend to know from experience that even though our device's built-in speakers might be good, they are no match for a good pair of headphones, and since everyone uses headphones in their own unique way, what's best for one person isn't necessarily going to be the best choice for another. Out of the numerous headphones I've had the opportunity to listen to this year, the following are the top contenders for best headphones of 2014 Rather than imperically declare one of these pairs of headphones "better than all the rest," we'll let you, the reader, decide which model is best suited for you. The headphones featured here are simply presented in order from least expensive to most expensive, and as you might imagine, a higher price often (but not always) indicates a higher quality product. In cases where headphones have the same retail price, they are listed alphabetically.

The end result of which is remarkably authentic 3D surround sound audio reproduction. The Monoprice 10585s are also notable due to the facts that they offer an impressive 25 hours of use, and that they are quite large for an on-ear pair of headphones and therefore provide a more dramatic, passive noise-isolation effect than a traditionally smaller pair of on-ears.

iPhone Life's Top 20 Headphones of 2014

Skullcandy Crushers (starting at $89.99)

If you're in the market for an excellent pair of headphones that really pack a powerful punch, the Crusher over-ear headphones are an excellent choice. A single AA battery provides the skull-crushing power and bone-rattling bass for these stylish over-ear headphones.

These Bluetooth headphones are unique in that they are one of the few pairs that support Apple's CD-quality Bluetooth streaming codec.

iPhone Life's Top 20 Headphones of 2014

More Black Friday deals are coming to light, most recently from Staples, as reported by iDownloadBlog. The deals include the 16 GB WiFi iPad Air for $319, 16 GB iPad mini 2 (retina display) for $239, and the 16 GB iPad 4 (the model prior to the iPad Air) for $279. These prices represent discounts in the range of $30–40. Staples is also offering the Apple TV for $79. And they're giving you 15 percent off on any iTunes gift card worth $50 or more. And finally, they're offering a 10 percent discount on all Beats headphones.

MacRumors is tracking Black Friday deals, so you may want to check in regularly there for updates. You can compare to see which deals are the best.

This year, Black Friday will begin on Thursday, November 27, for many retailers. And as is usually the case, supplies may be limited. Getting in on the good deals may entail lining up at the door long before the store officially opens.

Apple itself also usually offers Black Friday deals, which was how I purchased my iPad Air last year. (And in that case, supplies aren't limited.) I received a $75 gift card with my purchase.

Automatically Categorize All Your Images with PhotoTime

Orbeus, the company behind various image and video indexing tools, has added a new photo gallery alternative to the iTunes store. Using image recognition capabilities, PhotoTime(Free) identifies who or what is in the photo and groups them by keywords.

The current search function for photos in iOS 8 is limited to date or time, location or album name. But the easy compilation of photos with PhotoTime's immediate tags means less time swiping through hundreds of photos to find the right one.

The photos themselves can be pulled from nearly anywhere. As soon as you open up the app, you will have the option of grabbing photos from internal storage, social networks, Instagram, iCloud, and other third-party resources.

If you choose to connect the app to Facebook, facial recognition goes into full effect. Those on your friends list are grouped together by name, and eventually, PhotoTime learns to tag future photos with the corresponding name.

Once you have individual keywords in place, photos can be located with virtually any tag or identifier. And each search spans your entire photo collection.

Bookmarks can be created to organize your catalog even further. Using singular keywords or keyword combinations, images can be pigeonholed into smaller subsets.

Pictures taken after the bookmark has been created will also fall into their respective categories and subsets. If you have a bookmark with a "graduation" keyword, any image containing "graduation" content will be added.

Of course, you can still create custom tags manually to supplement a mass collection of related photos. And any misclassifications can be quickly corrected with the right tag, and the app will soon pick up how to better categorize similar images in the future.

The company promises they will not store images on their servers, so any privacy concerns can be laid to rest.

Tip of the Day: Quickly Find an Attachment in a Message Thread

You know when you want to show people that cute picture someone texted to you that you didn't bother saving to Photos? You don't have to scroll through endless conversations in Messages until you find it.

Open the conversation in Messages and tap Details. Scroll down and you will see all the attachments that have been sent in that conversation, starting with the most recent.

If the conversation has a large number of attachments, viewing the attachments in list form may make it easier to find a specific image. Tap one of the attachment to see it in full-screen mode. Then while in full-screen mode, tap again, and then tap the list icon to view the attachments as a list.
