Moto 360 Product Page Slips Out at BestBuy.com

$
0
0

BestBuy may have jumped the gun, but for now at least, their website shows the Moto 360 with pricing ($249.99) and specs, and states "Coming Soon" for availability. The page might come down, so here's a screengrab and the specifications.  The pricing is actually pretty attractive (as is the watch) given that it is voice actived, waterproof, and manages to fit in a 1.5-inch round LCD touch screen.

Of course, the Moto 360 requires an Android 4.3 or newer device, so Apple users will have to wait for an iWatch. The most impressive feature of the Moto 360 is the round screen, which doesn't quite use all of the surface area. Technical limitations make the bottom section completely black, so some have called this the "flat tire" design!  Still, it's an impressive piece of engineering. Apple, your move!

Tip of the Day: How to Block In-App Purchases

$
0
0

When you hand a kid an iPhone or iPad, you're essentially handing them access to your credit card. Fortunately you can adjust your device's settings so purchases require a passcode known only to you, or you can disable in-app purchases altogether.

To require a passcode for every purchase, go to Settings>General>Restrictions and tap Enable Restrictions.

Choose and enter a restrictions passcode and then enter it again. (This should be different than the passcode your child uses to access her phone.)

Scroll down and tap on Require Password and select Immediately.

From now on, a password will need to be entered for the Apple ID associated with the device for every purchase in the App Store, iTunes, or iBooks. Make sure only you know the password.

To disable all in-app purchases, go back to the restriction settings and toggle In-App Purchases off.

Apple's Diversification Endeavors: "We Are Making Progress" Says Apple CEO Tim Cook

Apple is a big company, and it doesn't make haphazard decisions. It’s also fair to say that given its stature as one of the world’s top companies and leading brands, it recognizes that it wields a great deal of influence culturally, socially, and politically. So for the maker of the iPhone and iPad to put so much emphasis on matters such as employee diversity, environmentally sustainable business practices, and human rights and civil liberties, is no small matter. Tim Cook recently said, "Inclusion and diversity have been a focus for me throughout my time at Apple, and they’re among my top priorities as CEO.”

" class="wysiwyg-break drupal-content" src="/sites/all/modules/wysiwyg/plugins/break/images/spacer.gif" title="<--break-->">

Apple's new video: Diversity - Inclusion inspires innovation.

Apple demonstrates over and over again that it is a company that's willing to“think different, and willing to adhere to a self-imposed higher standard. They also actively encourage us all to do the same, challenging us as a society to strive for excellence and practice greater tolerance and acceptance.

Recently Apple issued their diversity report and they've also created a webpage which openly shares the results. While the results may have not been a huge surprise, the report highlighted the fact that Apple, like most other American tech companies, has a staff comprised primarily of white males. This left Apple’s Tim Cook (a white male himself) expressing his frustration, saying, "As CEO, I'm not satisfied with the numbers on this page. They're not new to us, and we've been working hard for quite some time to improve them. We are making progress, and we're committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products."

For this hugely popular brand to make a point of specifically hiring employees from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds is a huge deal. For Apple to prioritize hiring women and gays is also extremely significant too. "Our definition of diversity,” says Cook, "goes far beyond the traditional categories of race, gender, and ethnicity. It includes personal qualities that usually go unmeasured, like sexual orientation, veteran status, and disabilities.” As the company’s own report shows, Apple employees are 70 percent male and 55 percent Caucasian, with women, minorities, and members of the LGBT community being disproportionately underrepresented.

Apple not only wants to draw attention to diversification, acceptance, and tolerance, they have been actively courting minorities, underrepresented groups and people who have experienced oppressive discrimination in the past. As Tim Cook once expressed in an editorial "As we see it, embracing people's individuality is a matter of basic human dignity and civil rights."

Apple's Dr. Dre Accepts ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

One of the newest Apple employees, Andre Young a.k.a. Dr. Dre, is the latest to accept the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Apple CEO Tim Cook and VP Phil Schiller also did it, and passed the challenge on to Dre. For the uninitiated, the challenge is to donate money to fight ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) or allow yourself to be doused by ice cold water. Of course, most challengees (especially the super wealthy and famous) are expected to do both. So far, quite a few celebrities have gotten into the act, including Bill Gates with a sophisticated contraption.

Dre

Dre took it in style—after all, when you're already that cool, ice doesn't make you much cooler. In fact, in the video, he's smiling, which is a rare sight. He's usually got a brooding, thoughtful look on his face. But becoming rap's first billionaire could make anyone smile!

Another part of the challenge is to nominate three others to take the challenge. That's how it goes viral, exponentially. Dre picked friends and collaborators Eminem, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar. Personally, I'm surprised he didn't choose Ice Cube, Ice T and Vanilla Ice!

iPhone 6 Rumored to Have 50% Faster LTE Data Speeds

Cult of Mac is reporting on a post on the Chinese website Geek Bar that says the iPhone 6 will come with a new version of Qualcomm's LTE chip that will allow for data speeds up to 150Mbps, compared to 100Mbps on the iPhone 5s.

This third-generation chip has been available from Qualcomm since 2012, but Apple hadn't yet adopted it since most of the carriers hadn't yet supported it. Now might be the time. While Geek Bar has been the source of misinformation the past couple days, including the claim that the A8 processor would have 1GB RAM, bloggers are saying that this latest rumor appears to be credible. Now that more carriers are supporting third-generation LTE, it makes sense that Apple would include this upgrade. According to AppleInsider, this LTE chip is not only faster but uses less power. In addition, Geek Bar says the new chip is better than that in the iPhone 5 and 5s because it's less susceptible to heat damage. The post on Geek Bar includes a photo purported to be the logic board for the iPhone 6, with the LTE chip highlighted.

Apple is widely expected to announce the new iPhone on September 9. Market analysts are pretty much universally expecting huge sales of the device, with Morgan Stanley issuing a very rosy note to investors on Tuesday saying that Apple's share price will likely rise. Morgan Stanley's advice to buy Apple stock now resulted in the stock going up over 100 and hitting a new 52-week high. They claim that this fall's product cycle is going to be different from recent ones, with higher profit margins for the iPhone 6, healthy profit margins for the iWatch, and ever-increasing sales in Apple's online services such as the App Store. All that, plus the expectation of Apple selling over 75 million iPhones by the year's end. According to a summary of the investors note on AppleInsider, Morgan Stanley has a price target on Apple of $110. The stock is currently close to Apple's all-time high.

Tip of the Day: How to Adjust Geofence Size for Location-Based Reminders

$
0
0

One of the coolest things about iOS Reminders is the ability to set location-based remindersReminders determine when you are leaving or arriving somewhere through geofences. But what if you keep receiving a location-based reminder everytime you happen to be near but not arriving at or departing from the location? Or what if you want to get the reminder sooner as you approach the location? Just make the location's geofence bigger or smaller.

To adjust the geofence's size, open Reminders and create your reminder or tap on an existing reminder.

Tap the i icon to bring up the Details menu.

Toggle Remind me at a location on and then tap Location.

Enter the address where you want to receive the location reminder. You will then see a map of the location with a blue circle around it.

Touch and hold the black dot on the blue circle and move it in or out to until the geofence is your preferred size. Tap Details and then Done. You will now receive your location-based reminder as soon as you cross the new boundary of the geofence.

Less than three months after announcing their new Sport line of headphones, SMS Audio made another huge announcement last week. They have partnered with Intel to offer their version of the newest fitness meets lifestyle gear–the BioSport in-ear biometric headphones.

SMS Biometric Headphones

Geared toward "ultramarathoners, aspirational exercisers, and everyone in between," here are the quick facts about the BioSport in-ear headphones:

  • Won't require batteries or charging cables, as they'll pull power through the headphone jack in your phone
  • Equipped with an in-ear heart rate monitor to replace chest-strap or watch-style monitors
  • Sweat and water resistant (IPX4 rated)
  • Syncs with the Runkeeper app to track heart rate, distance, elevation, and calorie burn

In addition to all of that? The headphones will deliver the premier sound quality that you've come to expect from SMS Audio. The SMS Audio BioSport In-Ear Headphones will be available in the fourth quarter, hopefully just in time for the holidays. Pricing will be announced later this year.

Photos of Assembled iPhone 6 Chassis Posted; Evidence Suggests 1,472 x 828 Resolution

$
0
0

For the first time, photos of an assembled iPhone 6 chassis have appeared online, giving a glimpse of what the forthcoming 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will look like. As can be seen on MacRumors, the images purport to show the rear shell and front panel assembled, but not a working iPhone. Rumors have said the styling would have rounded edges similar to the current iPad models, and that's clearly visible in the images. They also give a good feeling for how thin the device will be. Other rumored details apparently confirmed by the images include pill-shaped volume buttons, redesigned speaker holes, a relocated power button, and an embedded Apple logo.

The same Russian website that originally posted the above-mentioned images on Instagram has also posted a microscopic analysis of the display that AppleInsider says suggests the iPhone 6 will have a 1,472 x 828 pixel display. (This compares to 1,136 x 640 for the iPhone 5s.) AppleInsider reports that this resolution is corroborated by evidence in Apple's Software Developers Kit.

Also, a rendering out of China, as posted by AppleInsider, again suggests that the iPhone 6 will have a protruding camera lens, with the protrusion estimated at .067 millimeters. The post, though, notes that this could actually be the next-generation iPod touch, which currently has a protruding camera lens. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this feature on the iPhone 6, though.

The details just keep mounting up as we approach the rumored September 9 announcement of the next iPhone.

While much appears to be known about the 4.7-inch iPhone 6, everything else is a mystery. There's still no indication of when the rumored 5.5-inch iPhone will arrive, and the evidence continues to suggest it will come later. Also, while it seems pretty definite we'll see an iWatch or other wearable device from Apple, there's little indication of when that might be. Market analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who typically has pretty good inside sources, is now saying we may not see the iWatch until 2015. According to AppleInsider, Kuo has said that production issues may cause the delay, including components, system design, manufacturing, and integration between hardware and software.

Game Centered: The CEO and Founder of Skillz on the Future of eSports for Mobile

$
0
0

Game Centered features roundups and in-depth reviews of the best in iOS games and related gaming news. This week's Game Centered takes a look at a new company in the video game industry, one with truly great potential. Skillz brings the first, for-profit gaming arena to the mobile platform. With video gaming (otherwise known as eSports) bringing in massive international audiences, and equally large profits, the competition to be a top gamer is fierce, and with millions of dollars in prizes and sponsorships on the line, eSports have become a bonafide professional-level sport.

While mobile devices are only just starting to gain recognition as a legitimate eSports platform, they still have a long way to go until they have the superstar teams and recognizable champion players that are common in the console and PC eSport circuits. The fact that companies like Skillz, SteelSeries and Oculus are embracing the mobile gaming platform as they move forward is a sure sign that we've only just begun to see the paradigm shifting effect of devices like Apple's iPad and iPhone on video game culture.

Recently I had a chance to chat with Andrew Paradise, CEO and founder of Skillz, a refreshing new startup company that has created a way for gamers to train and then compete in video game competitions for real-world cash awards.

iPL: Thank you, Andrew, for taking the time to talk with iPhone Life. I have a feeling what your company has to offer will be of great interest to our readers in the not too distant future. Is there a Skillz app in the works?

Paradise: We have an HTML 5 app available at skillz.com/play. Through the app, players can view and manage their account across all Skillz-enabled games and can discover and download new Skillz games.

Skillz Lets You Make Cash Playing iOS eSports.

iPL: The iOS games available to compete in via Skillz are very few. What plans, if any, does Skillz have to change this? Are any major titles expected to become available to compete in through Skillz in the near future? It would be great to see Modern Combat 5 or Infinity Blade 3 or Real Racing 3 as gaming options.

Paradise: As of today, we have more than 150 games live in the App Store. We already work with large, publicly traded studios, like Glu Mobile, and we’re always looking for great new content. In the coming months, we will be announcing Skillz multiplayer competitions in numerous well-known titles, and we’re excited to bring eSports to the games that players already know and love as well as those that have yet to be discovered.

iPL: Where do you see the future of iOS gaming headed? Do you think the console manufactures should be nervous? Do you envision console and iOS games becoming more integrated, or do you see iOS gaming surpassing consoles in popularity, or play rates any time soon?

Paradise: While consoles are incredibly powerful gaming systems, mobile devices have several advantages including broader adoption, omnipresence in the consumer pocket, and the ability to integrate games into everyday life through location awareness and augmented reality. As a result of these features, mobile devices will play an increasingly important role in the gaming experience. While console manufacturers don’t necessarily need to be nervous about this trend, they do need to be adaptive because mobile gaming is undoubtedly here to stay.

iPL: Recently The International 2014 game competition received considerable media attention for being broadcast on ESPN and for the 10 million dollar purse it offered the winners. Do you ever see iOS games being played at this level? What are some of the biggest cash prize awards given out by Skillz?

Skillz Lets You Make Cash Playing iOS eSports.

Paradise: It’s really great to see multi-million dollar prize pools and mainstream media coverage for eSports competitions in games like Dota 2. Both the consumer interest and size of the prize pool speak to the incredibly bright future of the sport. Today, mobile is the most popular gaming medium. Mobile has truly democratized gaming, making gamers out of more than a billion people worldwide. Looking at just a single game, there are more than 200 million monthly active users (MAU) playing Angry Birds. That makes Angry Birds roughly 22 times larger than Dota 2. With audiences of this scale, mobile eSports will eventually pay larger prizes and have greater consumer interest and media coverage than console or PC-based eSports.

iPL: Very interesting! Can you give us an idea as to how much money some Skillz players are able to make?

Paradise: On the Skillz platform, we have some players that are already winning over a thousand dollars a week. However, this is just the beginning of eSports on mobile. We paid over one million dollars in prizes in just six months, and will pay outtens of millions of dollars in prizes in 2015. As our company, our player base, and our platform continue to grow, so will the size and scope of the tournaments we operate.

Product Review: STM Aero Small Laptop Backpack

$

STM sent me the coolest thing ever to test and review. It's the Aero Small Laptop Backpack ($64.89 on Amazonand it is absolutely loaded with features. As you know, I carry around a ton of gadgets. I always have a laptop, a tablet, multiple battery packs, chargers, cords…the list goes on and on. This bag fits it ALL in one compact bag.

The Aero from the Inside

When I first saw this bag and looked inside, I thought, "no way is this going to fit a 13-inch laptop!" But it did. The lining of the pack is so soft and smooth, it's easy to slip your laptop in and out without a struggle. There's also a pocket in front of the laptop pocket for your tablet. Which also fits in perfectly.

There are a gazillion pockets inside this bag (some with zippers, some without) so there's plenty of space for your stuff. Bring it all!

Outer Features

One of the things I like about this bag is that it does not scream "THERE'S A LOT OF EXPENSIVE GADGETS IN HERE! COME AND GET IT!" It just looks like a regular bag.

Since we're carrying all of our other devices, there's a zipper pocket on the outside that has a spot for your iPhone too, because why not? There are actually two pockets in there plus space for even more stuff.

The outer fabric is water resistant, there are a few strategically placed reflective strips, a pass-through strap on the back for attaching the bag to luggage when traveling, and some very nice, well ventilated pads on the back of the bag that keep you cool and comfortable when carrying it. There are also two elastic pockets on each side of the bag. You can put your water bottle in there or an umbrella or a small dog. Whatever you got.

Specs from the manufacturer for those of you who geek out like that:

  • Main materials: 300D water resistant micro ripstop polyester
  • Lining: 200g Nylex
  • Device space: 9.05 x 12.8 x 0.98 in / 23 x 32.5 x 2.5 cm
  • Outer dimensions: 16.14 x 10.24 x 5.51 in / 41 x 26 x 14 cm
  • Capacity: 10 L / 610.23 cu in
  • Weight: 1.46 lbs / 0.66 kg

I cannot tell you how excited I am about this backpack. It's attractive, offers a ton of options, and is very comfortable to carry. This is what's coming on vacation with me from now on.

iPhone Life Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Kickstart Your iPhone App Development with This Swift Programming class

I just learned of (and backed) a Kickstarter campaign to learn Swift and iOS 8 programming. It's being run by a friend and colleague of mine, named Paul Solt. He's an award-winning app developer and a great instructor. I've had the opportunity to attend live training from him, and he's offered video training before, also via Kickstarter, with great success.

Even though I know Objective C, I was able to pick up useful tips from his previous class, and since I have no background in Swift, I'm looking forward to a formal introduction. The class will take learners through the entire process of building several apps, so it's fine for beginners. In fact, almost all of us are beginners, because Swift was just introduced at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Kudos to Paul for ramping up and sharing his knowledge!

Swift training

There are actually three courses available. Course 1 is Swift and iOS 8 Apps in 31 Days, Course 2 is iPhone Games with Sprite Kit in 31 Days, and Course 3 is Real World App Experience. If you're interested in making iOS games, check out Course 2 and learn how Paul's company created Bomb Dodge. All developers who want to make money on apps will be interested in Course 3, Real World App Experience.

Tip of the Day: View Facebook Messages Without Downloading the Messenger App

There is no shortage of outrage over Facebook forcing users to download their Messenger app (and abide by their terms) by removing the messaging function from the main app. Turns out there is a way around it—though be aware this may only work until the next app update. Here's how to do it:

Facebook Messenger

1. When Facebook prompts you to install Messenger, go ahead and click Yes (or Install).

2. While the app is downloading, either delete the Facebook app or open the app store and cancel the Facebook Messenger app download by clicking the circle with the square in the middle, seen below:

Facebook Messenger Work Around

3. Reinstall the Facebook app if you deleted it, or reopen the Facebook app if you canceled the download. You should see your Messages button, just like before this craziness began.

Another option is to use Safari to access Facebook instead of using the Facebook app. Your Messages feature is still available there, just like it would be on a computer.

Thanks to The Guardian for spotting this loophole!

Apple News: Thanks for the Memory Boost

$
0
0

I’ve written before about Apple’s likelihood of introducing a 128 GB model of the iPhone, and possibly dropping the 16 GB configuration. I’ve also written about their reduction of the price difference to double the memory of a particular configuration, at least for the iPod touch. That was long overdue. For years, Apple charged $100 to go from 16 GB to 32 GB or from 32 GB to 64 GB, despite the decrease in memory costs over time. Combined with Apple's insistence on a closed design, with no expandable storage, those pricing decisions added insult to injury.

Now comes another indication that Apple is on track to releasing a 128 GB model of the next 4.7-inch iPhone (or the next one after that, as they could save the 128 GB configuration for the larger, 5.5-inch model expected later.) Alongside this speculation is the thought that Apple might keep the 16 GB model, but drop the 32 GB version. This makes sense because Apple will likely want to keep a low entry price, and the 16 GB model could do that, and by making the jump from 16 GB to 64 GB, they could keep their price points. It's a lot easier to swallow a $100 jump in price if you're quadrupling memory from 16 GB to 64 GB instead of doubling it. Keep in mind that 16 GB gets used up pretty quickly thanks to videos, photos, apps, and music, so spending the extra $100 to go to 64 GB now looks like the smart move.

A New Era at Microsoft

$
0
0

It's a new day at Microsoft. For the first time in decades, neither Bill Gates nor Steve Balmer are involved in running the company.  While Gates left years ago to concentrate on his charitable foundation, Balmer stepped down as CEO six months ago, and this week he dropped off the Board of Directors. Instead of concentrating on charity, Balmer will use his trademark enthusiasm to cheer on his newest acquisition, the Los Angeles Clippers.

Balmer is not the first Microsoft exec to buy a sports team. The Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trailblazers were acquired by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen years ago. There must be something about rich geeks wanting to own sports teams! I admit, when I went to Carnegie Mellon University, and I was the official school mascot (Scottie Dog!) we had a cheer for whenever the other team scored... "That's alright, that's okay. You're gonna work for us someday!" I remember seeing the billionaire Balmer one day at the Consumer Electronics Show a few years back, and I wanted to say "Who wants to be a millionaire?  Not you!" ... but I thought better of it, and left him alone!

Microsoft's new CEO, Satya Nadella, isn't wasting any time trying to transform the software (and hardware) company. He emraces the "Mobile First, Cloud First" trend, which Steve Jobs called "the Post PC Era" of course! Recently, Microsoft has gotten aggressive with low-end laptops, allowing some manufacturers to ship Windows PCs without paying a royalty to Microsoft. This has allowed them to price competitively with Google Chromebooks. Their pitch is, instead of compromising with a non-standard laptop (and getting "scroogled") customers can get an actual Windows computer that runs Office and has a decent screen.

Microsoft is trying to swing the pendulum back from Netbooks to iPads to Chromebooks, and now on to these low-end Windows laptops. Whether it works, we'll have to see, but with new leadership from Nadella comes the chance to make some bold moves without the baggage of previous CEOs looking over his shoulder.

Walmart Now Offering iPhone 5c for $27 and iPhone 5s for $127

$

Today Walmart began offering a dicount on the iPhone 5s and 5c, likely intended to clear out inventory in advance of the anticipated September 9 announcement of the iPhone 6.

They're selling the 16GB iPhone 5c for $0.97 and the 16GB iPhone 5s for $79. Each requires a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, or US Cellular. The 90-day in-store sale drops the price at least $20 over Walmart's previously discounted price. The best deal, though, may still be Walmart's Straight Talk iPhones. You do have to pay the full price of the iPhone up front, but then your cost is just $45 per month for unlimited voice, text, and data.

Rumors: First Photo of 5.5-inch iPhone; 2 GB RAM in iPad Air; iWatch 512 RAM, 8 GB Storage

$
0
0

While we've seen a lot of images online of parts purported to be for the 4.7-inch iPhone, there haven't been any glimpses of the 5.5-inch phone—until now. Posted on the website Evasion Jailbreak, the images show the back shell of the forthcoming 5.5-inch phone compared to a similar part from the 4.7-inch phone.

Not only is this of interest to get a sense for the relative size, but also it reassures us rumor mongers that a 5.5-inch iPhone is indeed coming, hopefully this fall. The rear housing also shows the same styling as we've seen in the 4.7-inch iPhone, with rounded edges, recessed pill-shaped volume buttons, and a power button that's been moved to the side of the device. The source of the photos is said to be someone deep in Apple's supply chain in China. Of course, one can't know for sure if the photos are legitimate. But the details are certainly in keeping with other rumors we've heard.

In addition, the website iPhone in Canada has passed along some tidbits about the forthcoming iPad Air and the rumored iWatch. Based on information from the Taiwanese news site TechNews, the post says that the iPad Air will have 2 GB of RAM, compared to 1 GB in the current model. More RAM means more apps can be running in the background—and it would help support the split-screen feature that's rumored to be coming. However, the post suggests that Apple may stick with 1 GB for the iPad mini. By way of comparison, the original iPad had 256 MB of RAM.

The same Taiwanese website has also reported that the forthcoming iWatch will have 512 MB of RAM and 8 GB of memory. Most interesting, though, is the website's claim that the iWatch will be a functional standalone device without necessarily needing to work in conjunction with an iPhone or iPad. Most smartwatches today receive information from a smartphone via Bluetooth. It would be an interesting step if Apple made a device that would work both with an iPhone but also independently.

When will we see the next iPads? Likely in October, if Apple follows their usual schedule. And the iWatch? Recent rumors have said it could be delayed until 2015. One thing is for certain: Apple doesn't mind at all delaying the introduction of a product until the company feels it's really ready for prime time.

Tip of the Day: 5 Instagram Tips and Tricks You May Not Know

$

0

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in thinking we know everything there is to know about social media that we forget it’s always evolving. If you’re like me, chances are you often don’t read about the new features added to your updated app or even bother to ask your friends about the tips they’ve discovered themselves. Here are a few tips and tricks that you may not already know about!

1. Share Photos and Videos Privately

Have you ever taken a picture and wished you could share it with certain followers without sharing it with everyone on your newsfeed? That’s exactly what Instagram Direct lets you do, giving you the freedom to privately send photos and videos to only select users. Simply snap a photo, add effects, tap Direct, and select the users you want to send your image to. Users will receive a notification and then you’ll be informed when they’ve seen your picture.

2. Compare Your Original to Your Edited Photo

A quick way to compare your edited photo with your original is to tap and hold your finger down on your image in preview mode during the editing process. Your edits will become invisible until you lift your finger again.

3. Dial Those Filters Down

If all the filters seem a little too intense for the image you’re editing, then double tap on the filter you love most and scale the intensity down.

4. Save Instagram photos to Your Phone

If you want to automatically save your Instagram photos directly to your phone, select settings in the upper right corner of your profile and then turn Save Original Photos on.

5. Save a Photo Without Sharing It

Maybe you want to save an Instagram photo that's all gussied up with filters to your phone, but you don’t actually want to publish it to your feed for the world to see. Simple. Just go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode on. When you go to “share” your photo, the upload will fail but the image will still be saved to your phone (as long as you've completed tip 4). Click the X and then remove the failed image from your feed.
