Paint on Your iPad with Sensu Brush and Stylus [review]

$

Another successful Kickstarter project reaches the market. This time it’s the amazing Sensu Brush and Stylus ($39.95).

When you take it out of the box, it appears to be a 4.5-inch stylus with the typical spongy rubber tip. But when you pull it apart, you'll find an artist’s bristle brush on the opposite end of the stylus. If you wish, you can use the double-ended tool as is. Or, you can insert the stylus end back into the barrel that houses it, and you will have a 7.5-inch brush with extended handle.

The styling is sleek and elegant; the quality is outstanding. You do have to be careful though about putting the brush back into the cylinder, so you don’t bend the bristles and damage them.

Although I’m not an artist, using the brush is a real pleasure. It gives paint programs a whole new dimension and the feel of using a real artist’s brush. Of course, you can use the settings in the particular program you are using to control the width and opacity of the brush along with the color. What’s nice about this brush is that you don’t have to wash out the paint after each application of color. Just change the color and paint on.

While the original intent seems to use this implement with an iPad, it will actually work with any touchscreen device. It’s just a matter of finding a paint and drawing program that suits your purposes.

Some of the ones I recommend for this purpose are the following: ArtRage ($4.99), Paper (free), SketchBook Pro ($4.99), Sketch Club ($2.99), Procreate ($4.99), SketchTime ($1.99), Brushes 3 (free), andAuryn Ink ($3.99).

They come in silver or black.

ECOXGEAR ECOROX Portable Speaker [review]

The EcoRox ($129.99) is a compact, attractive, rugged, waterproof, floating speaker. It measures 5.25 x 3 x 2.5 inches, which doesn’t make it the smallest in its class. It weighs in at 11 ounces.

The rubberized exterior gives it a no nonsense appearance and provides waterproof protection as long as the rubber tab is fastened securely over the charging and 3.5-jack ports.

There are several button controls on the top panel for the following functions: power, Bluetooth, volume down, volume up, previous track, next track, and phone. It also functions as a speakerphone.

The one I got for review has black rubber trim and red grillwork. But it also comes in all black and with orange grillwork.

There is a loop for a lanyard on the bottom, and it comes with a carabineer type clip. It also has a standard quarter inch mount port on the bottom for attaching to a bike mount, car mount or tripod. The mounts are sold separately.

The L-ion rechargeable7.4v 1800mAH battery takes 2.5 hours to charge and delivers approximately 10 hours of play time.  It comes with a mini USB charging cable, but no AC charger. The frequency range is from 125Hx to 18,000Hz.

The suggested retail price is $129.99, which doesn’t make this the cheapest in its class either, but it is more rugged than others I have seen.

Canary Home Security System: Sophisticated Security Brought to Your iPhone

$

I like to think of myself as a pretty tech savvy guy, but I have to tell you that setting up my own home security system was a major pain. It was complicated and time consuming and I’m not looking forward to the day when I have to upgrade and do it all over again. But maybe I won’t have to now that the Canary home security system ($199) is coming on the scene.

When I first heard about this revolutionary system on Indiegogo, I felt as if my prayers had been answered! The Canary is a single device home security system that tracks motion, temperature, air quality, vibration and sound in your home. You control it through an iPhone or Android device where you receive instant alerts if there’s a sudden change like a rise in temperature (indicating a fire) or loud noise (from a possible break in).

The Canary takes just 30 seconds to set up. This is a far cry from anything else on the market and it has great potential to bring reliable and easy to use home security to everyone—not just the wealthy. The Canary is also very versatile and can be set up anywhere from a small space like an apartment to a large house. The system is connected to the cloud and there are no monthly service fees.

The device itself is shaped like a soda can, and it’s packed with digital sensors, an IP camera that can see in the dark, a 100-decible siren, a microphone, and an 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi adapter for connecting Canary to your home network. But that’s not all!  There’s also a motion detector, an air-quality sampler, a humidity sensor, temperature gauge and an accelerometer.

What I think is pretty cool about the Canary is that it learns about the activity inside your home. It knows when you’ve come home and the motion detector learns the difference between your movements and those of your pets. When someone is in the house when you expect it to be empty, Canary will tell you through a purpose-built smartphone app. The app can also be used to arm and disarm the Canary so users don’t have to enter a code every time they enter or leave their home.

The Canary is clearly a great solution for anyone who wants to protect their home, their pets and everything they hold dear. It’s no wonder that it’s already met its crowd funding goals on Indiegogo.

While I have not had a chance to use the Canary, I had an opportunity to interview the founder and CEO, Adam Sager, who is a former sergeant with the Israeli Defense Forces. He has acted as a security consultant to large corporations before founding Canary. Adam had some interesting things to say with regard to bringing his product from idea into production:

iPhone Life: What’s the inspiration behind Canary?

Sager: About a year and a half ago, I was returning home from vacation with my family, and as I got close to home, I felt a sudden and deep sense of vulnerability. I didn’t know what had happened in my home while I was away. I think that’s a common experience. I looked to buy something to solve that problem, but was surprised to find that there is no real consumer security product available. Everything I found was either do-it-yourself or professionally installed; both options are expensive, complicated, and fraught with false alarms. I knew there had to be a better way, and Canary was born.

iPL: How did you assemble your core team? Are they people you’ve known for a long time or did you search for them?

Sager: The core team started to come together after a conversation with a friend of mine from the NY Tech Community, Chris Rill. It turned out Chris had had a very similar experience while living in London as a startup co-founder. He also returned home from vacation to find his apartment door broken down and covered with plywood. He found out later that the police had broken down his door (they had the wrong apartment), and being an engineer with experience in building embedded systems for the military and in software he built a monitoring system for himself. He was very enthusiastic about refining the concept to create a consumer security solution. Likewise, I knew Jon from when he first came to New York to work at General Assembly, and the three of us worked so naturally together that we built Canary. The rest of the team has been built over the past year.

iPL: What are some of the core values or beliefs that drive your company?

Sager: Canary believes in a very transparent approach to doing business, internally and externally. That includes an open dialogue with our customers, which is important to build the trust needed with security solutions.

We also believe that everything we do—from customer interaction to product development—must be beautiful. Everything we do must be done with the intention to create an experience like none other. It drives everything we do, and how we look at the market and at the world. We are fiercely focused on meaningfully impacting the world through the products and services we create at Canary.

iPLWho do you see using Canary and benefiting from it the most?

Sager: Young families and professionals that rent are primary examples. We also expect tech savvy adults to consider purchasing one for parents who live far away. Essentially those who need it most are people who think traditional security systems are prohibitively priced and largely ineffective. Do-it-yourself solutions are also complicated, and still pricey. Canary is the easiest way to connect to a physical place, and changes the way people from around the world think about home security.

iPL: How has the design/prototype/production process been?

Sager: It wasn’t free of difficulties, but we have an incredibly smart team, working through the designs and prototypes over the past year has been a very rewarding experience. We are all tremendously invested in the success of the product and company. At this point, we are lucky that some of the world’s most prestigious technology, infrastructure and manufacturing companies love what we are doing, so creating the right partnerships will only increase the chances of our success.

iPLWhat was your biggest challenge? How did you overcome that?

Sager: The biggest challenge comes right now, as we head into production. We deliberately held off on a crowdfunding campaign until we had working prototypes, because we’ve seen too many companies struggle to hit deadlines and ship dates as unforeseen issues crop up. Being farther along in the process helps give us confidence in our timeline. The tremendous response from customers, peers and the media has been incredible. So many people have reached out with outstanding questions and ideas that it is tempting to make changes and tweaks. But we have been ruthless about cutting out anything that diverts us from delivering the product we promised, and that our backers expect.

iPLYou got a great response on Indiegogo. How does this change your plans?

Sager: It’s inspired us to keep pushing, providing the best experience possible for customers. A lot of people are watching now. Canary must, and will be a revolutionary experience. The most exciting thing about Canary is that the more people use the device, the better it gets, from a data perspective, a learning perspective and in many other ways. By having so much interest early on, it ensures that the software will get better, faster.

iPLAre there any future enhancements or sister products for Canary that you’re hoping to be able to implement once it’s in the hands of consumers?

Sager: Right now we’re focused on getting this right. But we’ve got lots of great ideas, including some from people who are following our launch. We’re not planning any significant hardware updates to Canary, but down the line we expect to have updates to the software that will make the product better than ever. Our technology roadmap looks really exciting.

I enjoyed communicating with Adam, and it’s great that Canary is getting such a strong response. It’s the only thing like it out there right now, and it has great potential. Keep an eye out for it in 2014!

Spark High Definition Ear Plugs from ID America [review]

The new Spark in-ear phones from ID America ($48) come from an increasingly sophisticated evolution of a long line of predecessors. These precision, high-definition earbuds offer a combination of precision acoustics, unique design, and ergonomic enhancements. The dynamic driver and acoustic filter give intense full base with crisp and clear mid-range and treble frequency that will make you want to get up and dance with a big smile on your face.

The Sparks are wrapped in high grade aluminum for lightness and solid build, plus the casing reduces vibration and helps to deliver great sound.

These buds are compatible with iPhone, iPod, iPad, and most other devices with a 3.5 mm jack. But the advanced in-line microphone module works best with iOS products.

If connected to an iPhone, the music is interrupted automatically with an incoming call. One click on the inline mic will return to the music. One click will also pause a song or switch to an incoming call. Push the button twice to advance to the next song. Push three times to play the previous tune.

These phones are clearly a cut above the ordinary, and you might expect to pay more for them. They come in a handsome leather carrying case with three sets of extra ear pads in various sizes. The price is not that bad at just $48.

MuseMini DBoom Portable Speaker, Plus 15 Percent Off for iPhone Life Readers!

$

The DBoom ($129.95) is not just another portable Bluetooth speaker. While it does connect via Bluetooth, it also connects with NFC. Of course, Apple products are not currently capable of communicating with near field communication. But as MuseMini says, it's planning for "today’s and tomorrow’s wireless devices."

One of the limitations of NFC is that it’s meant for proximal communications, so you can’t be across the room or very far away from the speaker with your transmitting device.

Another fun feature of DBoom speakers is that they're very colorful; they come in blue white, black red, and pink. But the really fun part is that you can design your own or select from a variety of skins to customize the look of your personal speaker.

What about the quality? To my tin ear, the quality seems surprisingly good for a small portable speaker. I am continually amazed at the fidelity produced by these little boxes. This one measures 7.5 x 2.75 x 3 inches and weighs just over a pound.

It has 6 watts of stereo output from two high fidelity audio drivers with passive subwoofers for a rich bass that puts the boom in DBoom. The rechargeable 2600mAH lithium-ion battery gives you up to 12 hours of listening time at full volume and 20 hours at half volume. It can take up to four hours to charge the battery fully. Also, unlike Apple products, you can exchange the battery yourself for more play time.

It is also a hands-free speaker system with a built-in microphone. When connected to your phone, it will automatically interrupt the music playing and broadcast your phone call. When the call is finished, the music starts playing again. There is also a button for this purpose.

For even more boom, you can connect as many DBoom boxes as you like in a daisy chain with a 3.5mm jack cable.

In the box, you get a nice, drawstring tote bag, a double male 3.5 mm jack, and a micro USB charging cable. There is also a voucher for a free skin of your choice.

On the back there is a power switch that announces “power on” and “power off,” a USB charging port, and in and out 3.5 audio ports. The NFC chip also resides on the back. On the front, there are three buttons, two for volume control, and one for phone calls.

These little power houses are not cheap at $129 a pop, so I don’t know how many you would want to daisy chain, but it’s nice to know you can do it if you wish.

And good news! MuseMini is offering a special discount for iPhone Life readers. If you shop online at www.musemini.com, use the discount code "iPhoneLife15" for 15 percent off your purchase!

Do you have an idea for an app but lack the programming knowledge to begin buildint it? In this weekly blog series, I will take you, the non-programmer, step by step through the process of creating apps for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Join me each week on this adventure, and you will experience how much fun turning your ideas into reality can be! This is Part 18 of the series. If you are just getting started now, check out the beginning of the series here.

We've been discussing Core Data in my last several posts and now you should understand the basics of:

  • Adding Core Data to a project
  • Designing entities in a data model
  • Generating entity classes from a data model
  • How to retrieve, update, and delete entities
  • Creating business controller classes for each entity class
  • Using business controllers with view controllers

This week we're going to take a look at Core Data behind the scenes and examine the database that is automatically created for you the first time you try to retrieve entities. If you don't have it already, you can get a copy of the latest project from this link.

Examining the SQLite Database

When you run an app in the Simulator, a folder is created for you on your development computer's hard drive that contains the compiled app and its related files. To see this folder:

  1. Launch the Mac OS X Finder App (the one with the smiley face);
  1. In the Finder menu, click Go, and then hold down the option key. This adds Library to the list of folders as shown in Figure 1;

Figure 1 - Hold down the Option key to add Library to the list of folders.
  1. Select the Library folder from the menu to display the contents of this folder in Finder;
  1. Next, drill down into the Application Support folder, and then down into the iPhone Simulator folder. You will see one or more subfolders, one for each version of the iPhone Simulator you have installed on your computer (Figure 2);
iPhone Simulator folders
Figure 2 - The iPhone Simulator folders
  1. Next, drill down into the folder for the latest version of the iPhone Simulator (in this case, the 6.1 folder), and then drill down into the Applications subfolder. You will now see a list of folders with unique identifier names as shown in Figure 3. The unique identifiers on your machine will be different than those shown in this figure (that's what makes them unique). Each of these subfolders represents an app that you have run in the Simulator;
The Application folders
Figure 3 - The Applications folders
  1. Before drilling down into the next level, set the view mode of Finder to Cover Flow. To do this, click the Finder toolbar button shown in red in Figure 4;
Cover flow
Figure 4 - Select Finder's Cover Flow viewing mode.
  1. Before going further, let's bookmark the Applications folder so it's easy to get back here. Select the Applications folder and drag it to the left side of the Finder window under Favorites (Figure 5);
Add the Applications folder to Favorites
Figure 5 - Add the Applications folder to Favorites.
  1. Now let's try to find the iAppsReview project folder. With the Finder set to Cover Flow, select the first unique identifier folder in the list, and you will see a file with a .app extension along with Documents, Library, and tmp folders. Press the down arrow until you see the iAppsReview.app file as shown in Figure 6;
The iAppsReview folder
Figure 6 - Look for the iAppsReview.app file.
  1. When you find the folder that contains the iAppsReview.app file, select the Documents subfolder and you will see the iAppsReview.sqlite database file (Figure 7).
iAppsReview.sqlite
Figure 7 - The .sqlite file is located in the Documents folder.

To examine the contents of the .sqlite file, you need a special app, which is discussed in the next section.

Firefox and the SQLite Manager

I have found that one of the best tools for viewing a SQLite database is the SQLite Manager add-on for the Firefox web browser. I'll show you how to get this tool on your development machine.

  1. If you don't already have the Firefox web browser installed on your Mac, go to this link to download and install Firefox:

http://mozilla.org/firefox;

  1. After installing Firefox, go to the following link to download and install SQLite Manager:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/sqlite-manager/;

  1. Now that you have both Firefox and SQLite Manager installed, launch Firefox (you should be able to find it in your Applications folder on your Mac);
  1. After Firefox successfully launches, go to the Firefox Tools menu and select SQLite Manager. This displays the SQLite Manager window (Figure 8);
The SQLite Manager window
Figure 8 - The SQLite Manager window
  1. To open the app's SQLite database files, click the Connect Database toolbar button at the top of the SQLite Manager window (Figure 9);
Opening a database in SQLite Manager
Figure 9 - Opening a database in SQLite Manager
  1. On the left side of the Select SQLite Database dialog, click the Applications folder you added to Favorites in the previous section. On the right side of the dialog, drill down into the folder that contains iAppsReview files and then drill down into the Documents folder to select the iAppsReview.sqlite database (Figure 10);
Select the SQLite file
Figure 10 - Select the iAppsReview.sqlite file.
  1. Click the Open button to open the database in SQLite Manager. This displays the iAppsReview database files in the panel on the left (Figure 11).
Database tables
Figure 11 - iAppsReview Database tables

You don't need to know all the details about what each of these tables does. In fact, one of the main goals of Core Data is to hide these details from you. However, it's good to have a basic understanding of the underlying mechanics in case something should go wrong.

There are three tables, ZAPPCATEGORYENTITY, ZREVIEWENTITY, and ZUSERENTITY that have the same name as the entities that you added to the entity data model, but with a Z prefix;

  1. Expand the table nodes and you will see the columns shown in Figure 12. Z_PK is the primary key (unique identifier) for the entity, Z_ENT is the entity ID (every entity of a particular type has the same entity ID), and Z_OPT indicates the number of times an entity has been changed (starting with 1 when it is initially added to the database). All of the other columns are attributes you added to the entities in the entity data model with a Z prefix;
Database columns
Figure 12 - iAppsReview table columns
  1. Let's add records to the database so that we can have something to view in our app. Note that you shouldn't normally do this. We're doing it in this post to see first hand how a database works.

In the panel on the left in the SQLite Manager, click on ZAPPCATEGORYENTITY to select it. Then, on the right side of the panel make sure the Browse and Search tab is selected, and then click the Add button. This displays the dialog shown in Figure 13;

Add an App Category record
Figure 13 - Adding an App Category record
  1. Enter 1 in the Z_ENT, Z_OPT, and ZCATEGORYID boxes, and in the ZNAME box, enter the text Entertainment as shown in Figure 14;
Add an Entertainment category
Figure 14 - Adding an Entertainment category
  1. Click the OK button. This displays the confirmation dialog shown in Figure 15;
Add record confirmation
Figure 15 - The new record confirmation dialog
  1. Click the OK button to add the new record to the database. When you do this, the New Record dialog is redisplayed with a confirmation message at the top as shown in Figure 15. As stated in this message, if you press Cancel, you will exit the dialog. Otherwise, you can add another new record;
Record added
Figure 16 - Record inserted successfully!
  1. To add the next record, press the tab key until the ZCATEGORYID box has focus and its contents are highlighted (without changing any other values). Type the number 2, then tab to the ZNAME box and enter the text Games (which deletes the existing text) and press OK. In the confirmation dialog, press OK to save the record;
  1. Now let's add just one more category record. Tab down to the ZCATEGORYID box again, and this time enter the number 3. Next, tab to the ZNAME box, enter the text News, and click the OK button to save the new record. Afterwards, press Cancel to exit the dialog.

At this point you should now have three app category records in the database.

Test Driving the App

Now that you have app category records in the database, let's run the app again and see how this data looks at run time.

  1. Click Xcode's Run button;
  1. When the app appears in the Simulator, click the Write a Review row at the top of the iAppsReview screen;
  1. Click the App Category row at the top of the Write Review scene and you should see the three categories you just entered in the database as shown in Figure 17! If you are like most people, it's pretty exciting to see the app displaying entities that it retrieved from the database on the device.
Categories at run time
Figure 16 - The app categories at run time!

If you want to see more records in the table view, go ahead and add the following category rows to the database just as you did in the previous section and then run the app in the Simulator to see the new records:

ZCATEGORYIDZNAME
4Productivity
5Search Tools
6Social Networking
7Sports
8Travel
9Weather

Conclusion

At this point you have done much of the work necessary for adding Core Data to the iAppsReview project. In my next post we will enhance the project to create and update other entities and I'll even show you how to ship a database with your app so that your users have a database pre-populated with data.

Cross Link: ID America's Nifty Solution to Apple's Connector Conundrum

$

Apple has always been a maverick when it comes to connectors, first with its big old 30-pin job and now with the new lightning connector. Suddenly, people have to adapt or throw away the old and get new cradles, chargers, adapters, and what have you. (I have to admit, the lightning connector is nice because it has no up or down side, which is a clever feature.)

Well, here’s a nifty little appurtenance called the Cross Link ($17.95) from ID America that will help in this deplorable plight. It is a charging cable with a standard USB plug on one end and a three-way plug on the other. It sports a 30-pin plug, a lightning connector, and a micro USB plug.

So, if you’ve been frustrated with all these plugs, here’s a handy gadget that ought to make life more livable.

It comes in white, black, green, pink, white, and yellow to suit your mood, décor, and general environmental color scheme.

Check Out X-Doria's Line of Stylish iPad mini Cases

$

Cases for iDevices are like functional fashion accessories from past eras (hats, canes, dueling pistols, etc.). A case says you care enough to protect your investment, while allowing you to express your individual style. A heavy duty protective case might say, "I have trouble getting close to people, so I use a titanium robot of a case!" Seriously though, a bad posterior case could prove to be an ice breaker at a party, might get you out of a speeding ticket (never know?), or distract your mom from noticing you forgot to take out the trash yet again (definitely a long shot). X-Doria(starting at $19.99) has a line of unique cases and covers that say, "I can do anything, so watch out world!" Insert your own phrase of choice for positive reinforcement in there!

1. SmartStyle ($39.99)

The SmartStyle case affords basic protection, with a smart cover design that supports landscape viewing at a variety of angles. The coolest part—the cover has mind-bending optical illusions imprinted on it, which can hypnotize monkeys, if forced to stare at one long enough (worked on me). The material is not rugged or super tough, but should serve to keep your iPad mini's back and sides safe from scuffs and scratches in most cases. It comes in five unique designs.

2. SmartJacket ($34.99)

The SmartJacket is like a mini motorcycle jacket for your iPad but without the Hell's Angel logo. It looks glossy and tough, but it's really just made of TPC Polycarbonate plastic. The added smart cover can also work as a stand, so you can watch a movie even while cruising down the highway on your Harley, provided you can locate a flat enough surface (Warning: not recommended to operate motor vehicles and watch movies, unless you're a passenger). It comes in four colors.

3. Dash Folio ($39.99)

The Folio is for that boardroom meeting where all the other executives will show up with their leather, classy-looking covers, and you might be thinking of sliding iPad mini into that cheetah print number you bought at the mall. Not that there's anything wrong with cheetah print, but save that for the club later. Folio is a styling cover, case, and stand much like the SmartStyle above, but sans the mind-melting imprint, and perfect for when you want to dress your mini for understated success. The Folio comes in Black or Red.

4. Engage ($19.99)

The Engage is a simple translucent back shell. It says, "Hey, I like to let the Apple logo shine through." Basically, it let's you cover and protect your iPad mini without thinking too hard on it. Couple it up with a smartcover (my personal choice is the keyboard case by Belkin), and the iPad mini will have at least a basic level of protection all round (plus a cool keyboard). It comes in four colors.

New, from Kickstarter: eleMount iPhone Stand

I love the concept behind Kickstarter and many of the projects that come from its campaigns. Here’s a new one that went online this week. It’s called eleMount. I’m always looking for good mounting devices, especially universal ones that will stick to practically anything. eleMount fits the bill.

It will mount to your desktop, dashboard, windshield, wall or just about any surface, and you can stick just about anything to it, including cases. Of course it isn’t in production yet, so I haven’t had a chance to test it, but I look forward to it.

The base unscrews to expose a quarter-inch threaded port for connecting to tripods.

If you like this project and would like to help it come to fruition, contribute to its Kickstarter campaign, here.

2013 Infected Wars

Lately I've been more into co-op, multiplayer gaming than ever. Our iDevices (in my case, my iPad mini specifically), have given gamers the flexibility and convenience of engaging in multiplayer mayhem wherever we are, whenever we want, and in a console caliber format. And now, more than ever, there's a plethora of awesome multiplayer games to choose from, where we can engage in competition and challenges with other real-world folk.

A new game, 2013: Infected Wars($6.99), set to hit the App Store in a couple of weeks, will redefine the co-op battle genre once again as well as what a traditional, console-quality FPS can be.

2013 Infected Wars

From what I've gleaned from the press release and video trailer, 2013: Infected Wars is the all new action horror shooter for iOS, developed using Epic’s cutting-edge Unreal Engine 3. If you follow my posts, you already know I'm a fan of Epic’s Unreal Engine! In 2013: Infected Wars, players will finally be able to experience a full multiplayer co-op campaign with their friends, enjoying gorgeous visuals and gritty real world environments!

In fact, one of the greatest features included in 2013: Infected Wars is the option to play with your friends throughout the entire co-op campaign, from start to finish, something never before seen in the App Store! Every mission is designed to be played in both single player and co-op. As you progress deeper into the “red zones” (including desolate and ravaged cityscapes, highways, subways and more), your missions become increasingly challenging, requiring greater wits and tactical skill to survive!

2013 Infected Wars

I for one am ready for the challenge of this game, and I look forward to testing my virtual shooting and survival skills in a haunting and bleak multiplayer battlefield like none I've seen before. Stay tuned for a full review of this excellent new title once it is officially released, it won't be long now, stay tuned!

Disney Compiles 90 years of Film for Disney Animated iPad App

Fans of Disney will get a behind-the-scenes look at all 53 of Disney's animated films with Disney Animated ($13.99), the company's newest iPad app. Disney Interactive, Touch Press, and Walt Disney Animation Studios compiled animation clips, images, and 3D projections spanning 90 years.

Along with never-before-seen artwork from classic Disney movies, the app will also include a preview of the upcoming release Frozen, expected in November. Users are given the chance to animate Elsa's snow, a short clip of the film.

You can also play with the rigging workshop, another interactive component of the app. Using Vanellope from Wreck-It Ralph, you can create 3D animations and share via social media and email.

The Color Map is a collection of thumbnail images showing every single scene used in 52 of Disney's feature films. It plays music from each individual film as you scroll through the catalog.

“We had to look at each scene, multiple frame units at a time, and figure out what the dominant colors were, and then bring those together into one line in the Color Map,” said Theo Gray, co-author of the app. “Any patch of color in the frame will end up as a patch of color in the color map in direct proportion.”

The artifacts include a Pinocchio maquette, uncovered after being in a closed cabinet for nearly five decades, Hyacinth the Hippo from Fantasia, and Ursula from The Little Mermaid.

Concept art, trailers, and storyboards are featured in a book, showcasing some of the animation principles behind the movies. Animated characters, moving text, clips and development art are shown throughout the pages.

Disney Animated is the company's most expensive app to date, at $13.99. The app is currently available for iPad, and can be found on iTunes.

TuneMob Lets You Play Music on up to 7 iDevices! [review]

I sometimes review fancy wireless speakers that cost a load of cash, have slick AirPlay capabilities, as well as multi-speaker/room playback.

I never dreamed that my iPod and iPhone coupled with some old 30-pin speaker docks could create an immersive music experience. The secret is TuneMoba free app that works with Bluetooth. So next time you throw a party, you and your friends can string together as many as seven iDevices to amp up the sound.

TuneMob is only 8M in size, so it's not a problem for any method of install you should choose. I had a few minor issues with it, but it mostly ran fine and I have to say, I was impressed. The idea is to run this program on your iPhone (and an iPod or several Bluetooth enabled iOS devices). The player will stream out your local music to all connected iDevices going back to 2nd-Gen iPod or iPhone 3G (up to a total of seven).

The configuration is simple. Enable Bluetooth on all devices. Select Start on your primary device, and Join on secondary devices. Queue your playlist or songs (using the button in the upper left) select done, and press Play. A countdown will display while the stream buffers, and in a few seconds you should be surprised to hear your music emitting from both devices simultaneously.

Player control is limited to the master device, and is pretty generic (standard iOS player controls). The app imports your tracks and doesn't seem to remember what it imported from past sessions. The setup was a little wonky at first. I couldn't get the second device to connect for a bit, and the playing track started to lag just a hair behind the master as the song played. The developer told me they would look into that, and that newer versions will have superior streaming features and options.

The Verdict
Even with the few glitches in this very early release version, it is obvious TuneMob is a great (and currently free) way to crank up the party music throughout your house. It worked with all my old 30-pin docks and from my basement to the top of my house. The TuneMob folks are planning to keep the basic app free (likely with ads), and introduce a Pro version soon. TuneMob is a great way to share your jams live, practically anywhere with anyone, so go grab it at the link in the opener!

Pros

  • Free way to stream music throughout your house

  • Simple and easy to use

Cons

  • A little buggy

  • Limited functionality

  • BT not as high fidelity as Wi-Fi streaming

The Essential Meditations Deck - Relaxation is in the Cards

In our busy, stressful lives it's sometimes hard to find time to breathe and relax. Studies show that meditation creates feelings of calm, relaxation, and positive emotions.

The problem is finding time for contemplation and quiet in our day. The Essential Meditations Deck ($1.99) contains 50 exercises to focus the mind. Pick a "card," and it only takes a few minutes to set you on a different path. Each card has a colorful image on one side and a guided meditation on the other.

There are visualization meditations and meditations using focal points. For example, one card has you concentrate on an object that is near you, maybe a book or coffee cup and focus on the object until you are aware of its unique features. Another encourages the user to simply lie on the floor and breathe.

Some cards resonate with me, and some don't. If I don't like the exercise, I simply flip to another card. However, the inventor of the app, Oceanhouse Media, encourages users to try the meditations that don't immediately appeal because, "sometimes these reveal the most about our inner nature."

One card asks you to imagine yourself in a small rowboat being gently swept along by the currents as you try to release your need to control things in life. That's ok, but for me that would take much longer than a few minutes and instead of invoking feelings of relaxation, it may bring up feelings of, "Why do I do the things I do?" If you have more time and feel like questioning that, go for it.

Either way, if you are experienced in meditation or just need a short break in your day to breathe and focus on something other than all the work that still needs to be done, I've found The Essential Meditations Deck to be helpful. You can also email the different guided meditations to friends to start a conversation or simply encourage them. And, for two bucks, the app is much cheaper than a trip to a yoga studio.

5 iPad App Staples for Back to School

The start of the new school year used to mean crisp exercise books, newly sharpened pencils, and a graffiti-free pencil case. But these days, it involves a completely different type of preparation. The age of technology means you take notes on an iPad or laptop instead of with pen and paper, and rather than choosing a pencil case, you’re more likely to pick out a new iPhone cover or scour the App Store for useful apps. To save you a little time, we’ve scoured the web and compiled a list of our five favorite apps that will help you stay organized to become top of your class.

1. IMO Instant Messenger (free)

If you’re heading off to college or university and you’re going to be away from home for the first time, the most important thing to think about is staying in touch with family and friends. Award winning IMO Instant Messenger is, quite simply, the king of messaging apps, and the only one you’ll ever need. With fantastic features such as free voice calling, picture sharing, text and voice messaging, and group chats, there’ll be no excuse for not keeping up to date with all the news back home.

2. Evernote (free)

Staying organized with the productivity app, Evernote, is the best way to stay at the top of your class. Awarded ‘Top Ten Must Have App’ by The New York Times, Evernote features the ability to see your weekly schedule at the touch of a button while allowing you to add, delete, and edit events as often as you need. The stylish, clean interface makes it easy to see your notes and events at a glance. Plus. the option to share notes via social media will make group projects a breeze.

3. Dictionary.com (free)

Whatever you’re studying, from English to history, you’re going to be spending a lot of time writing essays, which means your spelling and grammar need to be at their best. With features such as audio pronunciation, example sentences and voice search, the Dictionary.com iPhone app will ensure your sentences are sharp and your spelling is spot on, even when you don’t have an internet connection.

4. Free Graphing Calculator

If you’re studying mathematics, statistics, or any of the sciences, you’re bound to have a whole series of calculators ready to take to college or university with you – but there’s always a chance you’ll find you’ve left your technology behind one day during a lecture. With the Free Graphing Calculator app, you’ll be able to carry your calculator with you wherever you go, so you’ll never be stuck on an equation again. With features such as scientific calculations, graphing abilities and a unit converter, this powerful app is the best of its kind available.

5. Scribd (free)

If you’re looking for a digital documents library app, forget browsing the web to read reviews and simply download the new Scribd iPhone app. Packed with various study guides, analyst reports, spreadsheets and newspaper articles, and including a PDF reader and the ability to read bookmarked pages offline, Scribd will help you add those extra details to your essays and projects, and take your grades from a pass to a distinction.

5 Icon Pop Apps That Will Drive You Crazy (In a Good Way!)

Warning! These five Icon Pop games will drive you insane. Every day we are surrounded by logos, songs and images. Icon Pop games challenges you to remember what they are when a particular detail of those images is taken away.

1. Icon Pop Brand (free)

We see brand logos everyday on TV, in grocery stores, and in our own kitchens. Trying to remember them is the challenge. Some are easy—I drink Coca Cola almost daily, and when I see a can without the cursive words flowing across it, I have no trouble identifying it.

However, when I saw an icon with a flowery image on a brown background, I felt like banging my head against a wall because I knew what it was, but couldn't pull it from that far-away place in my mind where I store things I don't use. Answer: Louis Vuitton.

2.Icon Pop Song (free)

A friend and I started playing icon pop song while she was visiting this summer and we were both going crazy trying to remember the artist of the song that was playing in quick 15-second bursts. We just knew the artist and song but couldn't think of it. My 12-year-old daughter finally walked into the room, heard the song and said, "That's Nicki Minaj." Then we smacked ourselves on the forehead. Of course!

3. Icon Pop Word (free)

I'm currently on the easy levels, where I have to come up with names for certain jobs. A camouflage helmet is a soldier, a car with legs sticking out from under it is a mechanic—you get the idea.

4.Icon Pop Quiz (free)

In this game, you have to name famous people, movie and TV shows, and characters using the visual clues inspired by each answer. In "Characters," I had to come up with the answer of an image of a spider web on a red background; Spiderman, check; a huge eyeball: Monsters, Inc, (a movie I've seen 500 times with my kids), check. This is on the easy level of course.

5. Icon Pop Mania (free)

This game is a combination of the other Icon Pop games. Name characters, places, movies, etc. On a bigger screen, like the iPad, this would be a fun game to pass around at a party.

There are five different ways for players to find the answers to icons they don't know. Spend tokens earned with correct guesses, pick up some general knowledge by using Hint, remove incorrect letters with Eliminate Keys, or use the Open Letters to figure out the right word. If all else fails, players can always Ask a Friend on Facebook or Twitter, or Reveal the answer with accumulated tokens as a last resort. These options are available on all the Icon Pop games.

Of course the first images/songs in each game are easy and make you feel good. As you go along the images are so familiar yet so disguised that it drives you crazy trying to think of it.

Though the apps are free, like me, you might find yourself doling out a couple dollars here and there for in-app purchases when you get stuck on the one that, for the life of you, you just can't remember. Another downside is that some answers require the name to be very specific. I answered "flash drive" for one image and it only accepted "USB."

So why do I play these icon pop apps if they drive me batty? Because it's fun! (and addictive!) I might have to come up with my own AA meetings for players of these games. Good luck!

Apple Rumored to Introduce iPhone 5S and Low-Cost iPhone 5C at Sept. 10 Event

All Things Dbroke the news over the weekend that Apple will be holding an event Sept. 10 to introduce the new iPhone. Nothing's official of course, but All Things D has a reputation for having solid inside information. It's not known exactly what Apple will introduce, but the evidence suggests Apple will announce the iPhone 5S and an iPhone 5C. Many parts and photos of the latter have been leaked, so the details of this phone seem fairly clear. The most intriguing photo, which accompanies this post, shows a carton of iPhone 5Cs in their boxes, which are clearly labeled iPhone 5C. I suspect that the "C" stands for color, since leaked photos have shown that the phone will come in multiple colors.

The video below gives a good overview of what the iPhone 5C will look like and what features it may have. The form factor will be similar to the iPhone 5, but will be just a slight bit thicker, wider, and taller. It will have a polycarbonite case rather than aluminum, no doubt to help lower the cost.

Apple is also expected to introduce the iPhone 5S,which is an upgrade to the current iPhone 5. It will look largely the same, but is expected to have new features such as a fingerprint sensor and dual LED flash. It will also likely have a faster processor. There are rumors that manufacturing of the fingerprint sensor hasn't gone smoothly and that supplies of the 5S would be initially be constrained to as few as 4 million units.

The Sept. 10  event is also expected to launch iOS 7, which will come on the new devices and will be available for downloading on other iPhones and iPads. It will feature a radical redesign of the icons and interface, but will functionally be the same.

I'm guessing that the iPhone 5C will replace the iPhone 4 and 4S, which Apple has continued to sell. When Apple CEO Tim Cook presented the results of the June quarter, he said that one reason iPhone sales had greatly exceeded Wall Street's expectations was that the iPhone 4 continued to sell so well, especially in emerging markets. It was bringing in a lot of first-time buyers. So there clearly seems to be a market for a lower-cost iPhone, and the 5C should be a popular entry in that market. it will be interesting to see what price it will carry.

The rumors don't mention the iPad in connection with the September 10 event, so any new iPad models will probably be announced at a subsequent event in October.
