Apple learned a lot from their underperforming Mobile Me service, and doubled down on the data center to support iCloud. Apple's cloud service handles iOS backups, iMessages, notes, music, videos, photos, iWork documents, Siri, FaceTime, and more; and for the most part, it performs without downtime.
Perhaps more significantly, Apple is leveraging 100 percent renewable energy to run their Maiden, North Carolina data center on "green" technology. The facility is the largest privately held solar energy farm. Biogas fuel cells are utilized as well. Excess power is even returned to the community.
