Apple's Lightning connector offers a number of advantages, but its introduction slowed down the availability of compatible third party accessories since Apple had to approve them individually. One such accessory I'd enjoyed on my iPhone 4S was the uNu DX Battery Case. It effectively doubled the battery life of my iPhone, and I found it invaluable at trade shows such as CES. Thankfully, uNu just released a version for the iPhone 5, which I was able to test.
As with the previous generation, the case is available in multiple colors and textures. You have your choice of a glossy white finish or a rubbery black model, and I believe uNu will be releasing a red model, but it is not yet available on its website. The battery pack's 2300mAh adds about 10 hours of talk time, so you can go a full day of full use.
The case provides openings to redirect audio, since Apple still has the speakers facing down, so this accommodation enhances volume. And since Lightning cables can be expensive and hard to find, the included micr oUSB cable makes charging and syncing more affordable and practical.
The UNU DX case design is an enhanced version of the 4S model, with attractive blue lighting to indicate the battery pack's power level. And a protective lip on the front helps protect the screen. One issue the previous model didn't have is a result of Apple's redesign. The headphone jack is now on the bottom with the iPhone 5, which makes it harder to reach since the uNu case blocks most of the bottom of the iPhone. UNU has included a headphone jack "extender" that adds about 3 inches so you can more easily plug and unplug your headphones on a flight for example, but I wouldn't want to walk around with the extender cable dangling around. It took awhile, but I'm glad to see increased availability of Lightning based accessories like the uNu DX battery case.
