While the App Store has a number of iOS applications for writing scripts, I haven't found much for the poetically inclined. I've been left to use the Notes app to jot down haikus on the go.
But a Kickstarter project by visual artist Seth Indigo Carnes aims to change that with his soon-to-be-released iOS app, iheart poetics. This application is designed to create and share interactive visual poems, which combine compelling text and vivid imagery. You have the option to begin with text, ranging from one word to a full poem you've composed. Once written, you can superimpose an image. Once complete, you can share it via email, MMS, Facebook, and Twitter.
iheart poetics evolved from Carnes’ vision, which was born from his collection of large and small-scale mutable text installations.
After sharing his work at exhibitions in Sweden, Chicago, and New York City since 2007, Carnes wanted to expand on his work's main concepts of group interaction, high creativity, and connection to life. He found his solution with iheart poetics, creating a hybrid poetry generator and interactive compilation.
In November 2011, Carnes launched his Kickstarter campaign with a fundraising goal of $19,000. A month later he exceeded his goal with 126 backers.
He offered incentives such as the usual tier of pledge packages, as well as chapbooks and prints specially designed and offered in limited edition. A select team of international advisors also bolstered the campaign by backing the app. In addition, the campaign has gotten major recognition through Wired Magazine’s Funding Innovators series in conjunction with Mercedes-Benz. Carnes has been steadily working toward getting a beta test for the application ready for the public and has provided a stream of updates via Tumblr and Twitter. Iheart poetics looks to be a revolutionary app that will join more people together in their love of iDevices and poetry. You can find more information at http://www.poetics.me.
