Google's new tablet, the Nexus 7, is now shipping. The price is $199 for 8GB of memory and $249 for 16GB. It has a 7-inch screen and runs Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean. It has WiFi but there's no option for getting a model that can access the cell phone data network, as my beloved iPad does. It weighs about half as much as the current iPad. And reportedly these gizmos are flying off the shelves. It seems clear that the 7-inch form factor is finding a definite niche whereas early on manufacturers could hardly give away 7-inch tablets, as consumers flocked to the 9.7-inch iPad.
