According to AppleInsider, the long lines at Verizon stores never materialized around the country. But according to a Wall Street analyst they spoke to, this could have been due in part to a large number of people pre-ordering online. He estimates that between 700,000 and 1 million Verizon phones were sold between the initial pre-order and the general online pre-orders that began Wednesday.
